Role Summary
Police Officer Candidates are non-sworn members of the Simmons University Police and Public Safety Department who work in a team-based environment to support the Simmons University Public Safety Department and the Simmons University community by providing Public Safety services with dignity and respect. Police Officer Candidates will assist in providing a safe and secure community with the highest degrees of ethics and integrity.
The Police Officer Candidate will be hired with the understanding that the police officer candidate will enter a Massachusetts Police Training Council (MPTC) recruit-officer police academy as a new candidate hire and successfully graduate from that academy, achieving POST certification as a law enforcement officer.
Upon the successful completion of the Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) certified basic police Recruit Officer Course, the Police Officer Candidate will be assigned as a Police Officer with the Simmons University Police and Public Safety Department. Police Officer Candidates patrol Simmons University residential and academic campuses to deter crime and to observe and report abnormalities, suspicious activity, and facility maintenance issues. Respond to calls for service; provide walking escorts to community members; assist police operations as directed; act as general public safety agents of the University, searching for and correcting hazards and violations of safety and security rules; conduct inspections of public safety equipment such as lighting, emergency telephones, detex alarms, door ajar alarms, panic alarms, fire extinguishers, AED's, first aid kits, etc.
Essential Duties
- Provide and restrict access to University facilities by conducting locking and unlocking operations as needed.
- Prevent criminal activity in and around the University through highly visible, omnipresent patrols. Provide and/or participate in crime prevention briefings to the community. Attend community events and speak to students, faculty and/or staff regarding strategies and tactics to stay safe.
- Operate department communication equipment; answer telephone inquiries; receive and document reports of criminal activity; dispatch foot and mobile units; operate the paging system; monitor alarm and CCTV systems.
- Take emergency and routine calls for service, record the details of the calls, dispatch appropriate public safety or other resources, and provide the details of those calls to responding officers. Demonstrate working knowledge and application for all relevant Rules and Procedures, Standard Operating Procedures, and Emergency Response Protocols relevant to their duties and responsibilities as Dispatchers.
- Interact with and monitor a variety of electronic database systems as end users, including Computer Aided Dispatch, Video Insight- IP Video-based surveillance system, PTZ Cameras, IPARC, Bosch-Telex, C*Cure, ARMS, Web RMV, Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS), and Workday.
- Support all University departments, particularly Residential and Student Life and Buildings and Grounds.
- Communicate with the Boston Police Department (BPD), Boston Fire Department (BFD), Boston Emergency Medical Services (BEMS), and other relevant Federal, State, and Local enforcement and safety/security-related agencies that provide for the public safety on campus and in the immediate surrounding areas.
- Responsible for important emergency and routine notifications to a variety of University and outside officials, including the Public Safety command staff, Buildings and Grounds staff, Student and Residential Life staff; Health Center and Counseling staff, BPD, BFD, and BEMS as well as dispatchers at other area colleges.
- Monitor all security and life safety systems on campus to ensure that they operate properly and to respond as needed.
- Perform safety and security inspections of all campus facilities, grounds, and equipment on foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle. Assist with parking enforcement and the monitoring of parking resources.
- The Chief of Police and/or their designee may assign other duties of Department operation and function as needed to best suit the Department and University needs.
Position Requirements
- High School Diploma (associates or bachelor degree preferred);
- Applicant must be age twenty-one (21) at the time of application;
- Must have a valid Class D operator's license at the time of appointment;
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Massachusetts Class A Large Capacity License to Carry Firearms;
- Successful completion of all MPTC pre-academy entrance requirements;
- Successful completion of a Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) certified basic police Recruit Officer Course;
- Obtain and retain a POST (Peace Officers Standards and Training) certification;
- Obtain and retain Special State Police powers in accordance with M.G.L. ch.22 s. 63;
- Obtain and retain Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff's powers.

The Simmons University Public Safety Department operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a Week. Officers may be assigned to any of the duty shifts following a four-day, two-day-off rotating schedule. This position is also subject to mandatory overtime under certain circumstances. Holiday and weekend work are required. The Department is considered an essential function of Simmons University. The incumbent must respond during emergency conditions, and as such, all Officers may be called back for assignment.
In consideration of the fact that this program does necessitate an initial expense for training at a police recruit academy, a caveat will be included in the offer of employment, necessitating three years of service with the Simmons University Police Department. "This employment opportunity has the following additional stipulations: An employee who voluntarily terminates employment with the Simmons University Police Department prior to three (3) years of service following completion of a University-sponsored police recruit academy shall reimburse the University for expenses related to such training at the rate of $600.00 per week for each week of attendance at a recruit academy while employed by Simmons University. The total indebtedness shall be forgiven at a rate of one-thirty-sixth (1/36) for each month of service as a Simmons University police officer following completion of said academy."
Starting Pay: $22.59 per hour (when annualized is $47,000)Pay upon academy completion: $28.28 per hour (when annualized is $58,822)
