Job Overview New Hanover County is seeking Telecommunicators to answer emergency calls and monitor radio dispatch in the 911 Public Safety Communications Center. This role provides the primary point of contact for citizens in emergency situations, supporting first responders with timely, accurate dispatch. Responsibilities Dispatch appropriate emergency and non‑emergency personnel to calls for service or complaints. Receive and dispatch calls, securing necessary information from callers in state of excitement or panic. Prioritize calls based on nature of request, unit availability, and other pertinent information. Monitor radio transmissions of personnel for accurate response and additional assistance. Maintain accurate logs in Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD). Monitor and maintain current awareness of the locations and status of police, fire, and ambulance units. Prepare and maintain records and logs including warrant files, NCIC, and DCI entry files. Operate manual dispatching systems when automatic systems are not functioning. Perform other related duties as required and assigned. Work nights, weekends, holidays, order‑in coverage, and unrestricted mandatory overtime in a 24‑hour operation requiring shift work and assigned shift changes. Qualifications High school diploma or GED with at least 1 year of related experience involving a high level of multitasking and public contact. Knowledge of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) desired. Knowledge of county streets, highways, and waterways preferred. Bilingual in English and Spanish a plus. Licensing and Certifications Must obtain CPR certification. Must obtain DCI (Department of Criminal Investigation) operator and emergency medical, fire & police dispatch certifications; training provided. Must be able to obtain DCI certification through the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) to perform essential duties; U.S. citizenship is required. Must pass background check and fingerprint evaluation. Work Schedule & Compensation Full‑time applicants will be assigned 12‑hour shifts on dayshift, nightshift, or midshift, including weekends and holidays. Part‑time applicants may work up to 19 hours per week, including weekends and holidays (part‑time positions are not eligible for benefits). Annual salary starts at $44,152.00, plus a competitive benefits package. Eligible candidates may receive a one‑time sign‑on bonus of $2,000, paid in two installments. Night shift workers receive a 5% pay differential for hours worked between 7 pm and 7 am; bilingual candidates may receive a 5% differential when performing duties requiring Spanish fluency.
