Phlebotomist

Job Summary Phlebotomist responsible for specimen collection, processing, clerical duties, and laboratory operations. Work under supervision of department supervisor, manager or director to support department goals and regulatory compliance. Responsibilities Demonstrate a thorough understanding of specimen collection and testing requirements and rejection criteria. Perform venipunctures and finger sticks on pediatric, neonatal, adult and geriatric patients. Perform heel sticks on infants (as patient population requires). Utilize supplies appropriately and follow established procedures for patient identification and specimen collection. Complete appropriate specimen collection documentation and educate patients/families about procedures. Use computer information system related to job functions. Handle clerical duties such as faxing, telephone, pneumatic tube system, and reporting. Prioritize tasks and plan for completion of duties. Review Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and address pending specimen issues. Receive laboratory specimens into the laboratory information system. Perform registration and order‑entry procedures accurately and timely. Label specimens and aliquot according to protocols and ordered tests. Centrifuge and aliquot specimens appropriately based on specimen type and tests ordered. Prepare specimens for courier pickup, including special instructions from physician orders. Discard laboratory specimens following established schedule. Perform periodic preventive maintenance and quality assurance procedures as assigned. Collect chain‑of‑custody drug collections per policy. Maintain records/documentation of specimen problems and corrective actions. Clean area in case of emergency specimen spills. Assess specimen requirements for referral testing and troubleshoot related issues. Process, sort, and prepare specimens for submission to referral laboratories. Monitor and review status of referred testing to ensure results are received and available within turnaround times. Communicate and troubleshoot problem specimens promptly. Qualifications Ability to interact with co‑workers in a team environment. Promote harmonious and cooperative working environment. Excellent customer service practices in all interactions. Effective communication with all personnel to exchange accurate and timely technical information. Assist in communication with customers, floors, and physicians regarding problems and pending specimens. Minimum 2+ years of experience performing registration, clerical duties, and specimen processing. Follow safety policies and procedures. Protect sensitive and confidential information by participating in the Privacy & Security Awareness program. Adhere to company policies and standards regarding security. Complete assigned courses and training annually. Available to work during disasters. Education & Experience Vocational or technical degree preferred. One to three years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting preferred. Certification / License Phlebotomy, Medical Assistant, Paramedic, or EMT certification preferred.
