Radiology Technologist / 40 hours/ 2nd shift and EOW

Eligible for a $7,500 sign‑on bonus. Job Summary Performs a wide variety of radiographic examinations and related procedures to produce quality images for diagnostic evaluations. Prepares patients for exams using general and specialized radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment, cameras, potables, c‑arms and other ancillary equipment. Complies with all radiation safety regulations, and participates with physicians in more complex procedures involving insertion of catheters and/or administration of contrast media. Assists in the Emergency Department on evenings, afternoons and weekends. Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities Performs radiographic exams, receives orders for designated examinations and prepares the room, checking that all required equipment and supplies are available. Transports patients on stretchers or wheelchairs to and from examining rooms and other areas as required. Positions patients on a table or in appropriate standing/sitting posture, lifts, moves, positions and stabilizes totally incapacitated patients, and attaches or adjusts immobilization or supportive devices such as sandbags, pillows, binders and related appliances. Checks and adjusts exposure parameters (voltage, amperage, duration), makes required computations and calibrations, activates equipment and takes the required number of exposures, and repositions patients between exposures. Radiographs all body areas such as head, chest, spine, abdomen and extremities. Processes films using automated equipment and transports portable equipment to inpatient units or the operating room to take bedside exposures. Assists radiologists and/or other technologists in carrying out more complex special examinations such as angiograms, bronchiograms, biopsies, etc.; assists in administration of opaque media orally, by injection or enema, preparing sterile trays and timing medications; assists with procedures involving insertion of pacemakers, Swan‑Ganz catheters, etc. Determines the type of contrast media to be used based on prescribed criteria. Maintains Radiation Safety Maintains radiation exposure levels to minimize patient dose by adjusting equipment for proper centering and exposure angle. Arranges shielding devices. Stands behind protective barriers or wears lead aprons to meet Alara requirements, and protects visitors and the public from unnecessary radiation exposure. Maintains Communication Explains procedures to patients, provides preparatory instructions, reassures anxious patients, reads reports over the phone, answers inquiries about Ultrasound, CT Scan, Nuclear Medicine and MRI services, and maintains high quality control standards. Maintains equipment and work area clean and orderly; when using portable equipment in the operating room during surgeries, follows all sterile technique protocols. Maintains sterile techniques when preparing contrast media for injection and sterile trays for complex procedures. Performs preventive maintenance on instruments/equipment, makes minor adjustments or repairs, and refers defective equipment for repair or replacement. Handles uncooperative patients and/or distraught family members, observes patient condition and reports unusual circumstances to supervisor. Initiates emergency procedures as authorized and is available for call‑in or other emergency duties. Exercises Charge Responsibility as Required Assumes charge responsibility for the section when needed; directs technologists and support staff, distributes work and room assignments, calls in extra staff for emergencies, and assists in arranging coverage for the next shift. Reviews films for quality and readability, taking steps to meet quality control standards, and attaches clinical forms to films for the radiologist. Provides Proper Record Keeping and Required Documentation Completes all required forms, records and reports concerning the number and type of procedures performed. Maintains up‑to‑date knowledge of departmental filing and record‑keeping systems. Attaches identifying information to films, copies and packages films for referral to outside hospitals. Performs clerical and related tasks in the absence of clerical staff and completes STAT reports. Performs Related Duties Attends 66% of staff meetings. Attends in‑services. Acknowledges all tests to generate patient charges on a daily basis. Assists clerical support staff with patient schedules, record keeping and related tasks, and assists in ensuring adequate supplies and equipment are available. Qualifications High school diploma and a 2‑year accredited program in radiologic technology. Radiologic technologist registered through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and licensed in Connecticut; advanced certification in CT or mammography highly recommended. General orientation at time of hire; annual fire/safety/infection control; healthcare provider CPR from the American Heart Association, or professional rescuer CPR from the American Red Cross or comparable programs. Registered or registrable. Physical: on feet most day, lifting >50lbs occasionally; routine lifting up to 35lbs daily; agility for bending, stooping, walking, reaching, standing, pulling, pushing, twisting; hearing and sight corrected; verbal communication clear; manipulation of radiology equipment and patient response monitoring. Work environment: radiation exposure; patient element; chemical fume exposure; varied lighting and temperature. Cognitive: excellent oral and written communication, literate in English, excellent reading and mathematical skills, ability to read, comprehend, execute written and oral instructions, good organizational and decision‑making skills.
