Assistant United States Attorney (Civil) USAO Southern District of Texas – 600 E. Harrison, Brownsville, TX. The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas serves more than 8.3 million people across 43 counties, covering 44,000 square miles from the Houston area to the Mexican border. The Office is engaged in securing the border, combating narcotics trafficking, deterring violent crime, and enforcing federal civil law across a fast‑paced, court‑rich environment. This role is part of the Civil Division, which handles a broad range of federal civil matters, including land condemnation on the U.S.–Mexico border, immigration enforcement, warrant issuance, asylum and passport cases, and general civil litigation. Qualifications Required Qualifications J.D. degree. Active membership in any U.S. jurisdiction bar. At least 1 year of post‑J.D. legal or related experience. U.S. citizenship. Preferred Qualifications Strong academic record. Superior legal research and writing skills. Rapid analytical ability to articulate complex case issues accurately. High‑volume courtroom experience, including first‑chair jury trials. Excellent organizational, time‑management, and interpersonal skills. Ability to collaborate in a professional team environment with other AUSAs, support staff, and investigative agencies. Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service. Computer proficiency and self‑sufficiency in legal research, writing, and preparation of day‑to‑day correspondence and pleadings. Security Requirements The initial appointment is conditioned upon satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment requires a favorable background investigation outcome. Pay Range Administrative pay is determined by the number of years of professional attorney experience and ranges from $63,163 to $195,100, including locality pay.
