Job Title: Phlebotomist IJob Description This Phlebotomist I role focuses on safely and accurately collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting efficient laboratory workflow. You will perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, ensure proper labeling and documentation, maintain specimen integrity, and assist with troubleshooting and workflow improvement in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment. Responsibilities + Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety. + Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols. + Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients before and during collection. + Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy. + Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders. + Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy. + Package specimens for transport, following required procedures to maintain specimen integrity. + Store specimen samples at the appropriate temperature and place them in the correct collection containers or tubes. + Follow different handling and transport procedures as outlined by specific protocols to preserve specimen quality. + Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing. + Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as required. + Update patient information accurately in the appropriate systems or documentation. + Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards. + Attend annual department trainings and maintain required competencies. + Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to callers when appropriate, helping to satisfy inquiries. + Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency. Essential Skills + Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required. + At least 6 months of hands-on phlebotomy experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. + Ability to perform venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles. + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. + Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test requirements. + Strong attention to detail when matching requisition forms, labels, and orders. + Clear, courteous communication skills for explaining procedures and answering inquiries. + Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations. + High School Diploma or GED. + 0-2 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory setting. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience working in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment. + Comfort handling various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples. + Ability to interpret physicians' orders and follow detailed protocols. + Strong organizational skills for managing multiple specimens and tasks simultaneously. + Willingness to attend ongoing department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulations. Work Environment This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where you regularly interact with patients, clinical staff, and laboratory personnel. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems. The environment requires strict adherence to safety protocols and regulatory standards such as OSHA and DEP, as well as careful handling and storage of specimens at appropriate temperatures. You will frequently use computers and Microsoft Office Suite to update patient information, verify orders, and document specimen handling. The position involves standing for extended periods, performing repeated venipunctures, and managing multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and patient-focused service. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Chesapeake, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
