The Park Maintenance Supervisor in Athletics is responsible for directing the Sports Turf Maintenance staff in the operation and maintenance of Athletic field turf. Responsibilities include the direct supervision of 2 Assistant Supervisors, and maintenance staff of 11 within area of responsibility. Also responsible for planning, organizing, prioritizing, and implementing the Sports Turf field maintenance and work programs. Candidate must have a strong background in planning and managing an athletic field turf program. Provides input for budget, CIP, CRF, and service contracts. Responsible for purchasing necessary supplies and tools required for Sports Turf maintenance. Responsible for equipment, supplies, and oversight of safety related programs. Responsible for planning for and preparing and supporting Athletic fields for league play, camps/clinics, and events. Weekend work is required. Plano Parks and Recreation is seeking a Park Maintenance Superivsor to join the Parks Athletic Division. This position directs the establishment, preparation and on-going maintenance, care and upkeep of 14 athletic sites. Experience with communicating, supervision, contractor management and equipment operation is valuable. This position contributes to athletic site maintenance and strategic planning, so desired traits include, (1) strong communication, (2) leadership (3) decision making (4) detail oriented, with (5) athletic maintenance practices. This position supervises a workforce two Assistant Superivsors and 11 maintenance staff who primarily function in the field. Weekend work is required, on-call is required, normal hours are 6:30 – 3:30 M – F. Plano Parks & Recreation is a four-time NRPA/AAPRA National Gold Medal Award winner and CAPRA accredited agency. Plano is in north Texas and has been recognized nationally for quality of life. The target salary range for this position is $56,035 – $68,642. Creates mowing schedules for a variety of properties, including: public building grounds, athletic fields, neighborhood parks, linear, community and special use parks, medians, and rights-of-way. Develops and implements turf establishment and development programs, including seeding, sodding, aerification, irrigation, fertilization, and chemical treatments. Directs the installation and care of various plant materials, ground covers, annual and perennial floral displays, shrubbery, and trees. Creates and implements a broad spectrum program of preventive and curative chemical treatments for turf and various plant materials, emphasizing environmental responsibility and safety. Develops and implements non-growing season projects for district improvements, including landscape construction, renovations, grading, irrigation installation, tree planting and pruning. Leads the grounds preparations and special setups required for events ranging from homeowners’ association picnics to major attractions drawing large crowds. Directs and supervises work goals; establishes appropriate performance goals for district employees; provides periodic assessments of performance levels; recommends corrective and/or disciplinary actions. Develops and implements appropriate irrigation rates and schedules for various types of properties utilizing a wide array of irrigation system components. Monitors and provides assessments of compliance of multiple contractors engaged in various district related projects. Investigates and provides appropriate responses to citizen inquiries, requests and complaints. Investigates job related accidents, injuries, property damage and incidents of vandalism; implements incident reports and damage estimates of loss. Assists in development of district budget and direct expenditures throughout the budget year; procures appropriate equipment and supplies, using City-wide processes and within policy and budget guidelines; maintains purchase and use records. Manages payroll approval for assigned staff Directs the daily use and appropriate maintenance of all district equipment, ranging from hand tools to large area mowers and various vehicles; provides assessments of equipment effectiveness and recommendations for new purchases. Schedules clean up and sanitation for various properties, including regular litter removal, restroom cleaning and stocking, and hardscape and furnishings cleanup. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential. Marginal Duties Performs other duties as assigned. Typical Decisions The incumbent must assess the grounds maintenance needs for properties and provide the most efficient, effective and highest quality maintenance for each area. The incumbent must recognize various plant and turf diseases and conditions, and choose appropriate corrective measures. The incumbent must establish performance measures for subordinates and evaluate employee performance against those standards of measure. The incumbent must prioritize district work projects and disbursement of resources. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge of: Landscape maintenance methods and equipment; turf and plant material establishment and development; locally prevalent turf and plant diseases, problems, and corrective measures; common landscape construction and renovation activities; safety policies and procedures. Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; operation of a computer and standard software; maintaining accurate records; planning maintenance projects; operating a vehicle; developing and adhering to a budget; maintaining accurate records, logs and documents; prioritizing and delegating tasks. Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent. Experience: Three (3) years of experience in grounds maintenance and some supervisory experience, including leading and evaluating the work of several subordinates. Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements. Licenses and Certifications: Texas Class C driver’s license (must obtain within 30 days of hire per state law). Texas Pesticide Applicator License required, or possession within five (5) months of assignment to position. Certified Professional Turf Manager or Certified Sports Turf Manager are preferred. Conditions of Employment Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to work in the field including traversing uneven terrain, to operate a motor vehicle, and tools and equipment, and to visit various City sites; vision to inspect assigned areas and equipment, to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person, before groups, and over the telephone. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking conducting inspections to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, to operate standard office equipment, conduct tests and inspections and to operate tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, and kneel. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Employees partly work in the office and partly in the field; when in the field incumbents may be exposed to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, mechanical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
