Policy Coordinator
$56k - $62kThe Clean Slate Initiative
About The Clean Slate Initiative
Founded in 2019, The Clean Slate Initiative (CSI) is working across the country, and in Congress, to pass and implement laws that automate record sealing for people with eligible records who have completed their sentence and remained crime-free, and to expand who is eligible for sealing.
CSI’s vision is that people will no longer be defined by their records and will have the opportunity to contribute to their community, have a fair opportunity to work, get an education, and achieve their full potential. To date, 14 states, and Washington D.C., have passed Clean Slate laws impacting more than 18 million people . CSI works with bipartisan leaders and organizations and offers our expertise on what works: intelligent policy design, an eye toward implementation, and campaign strategies that center lived experience. Along the way, we work to redefine the narrative around people with records, cutting through the bias and stigma, to reorient the legal system to live up to the ideals of second chances. Learn more about our work here .
About the Opportunity
The Clean Slate Initiative is seeking a Policy Coordinator to support our policy team through project management, policy research, and technical assistance. Reporting to the Public Policy Director, this role will help maintain knowledge of record relief policies across all 50 states, support cross-functional initiatives, and develop resources that inform CSI's policy, campaign, and implementation work.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and enjoys translating complex policy information into practical tools that help teams make informed decisions.
Responsibilities
- Support the Policy Department's day-to-day operations through project management, meeting coordination, and task tracking
- Contribute to both small-scale initiatives and larger strategic policy projects while ensuring timelines and deliverables stay on track
- Create, maintain, and update internal policy tracking tools, legislative comparison frameworks, and knowledge templates related to record relief laws across all 50 states
- Track legislative developments using PolicyNote and maintain accessible summaries of state policy landscapes, implementation questions, and emerging trends
- Develop and maintain policy resources that support research, campaign planning, implementation, and technical assistance across CSI
- Conduct research on record relief and adjacent policies, including sealing, expungement, automated relief, and petition-based relief
- Compile and organize policy information, including eligibility rules, exclusions, waiting periods, procedural requirements, implementation structures, and other key policy choices
- Respond to policy questions from CSI staff and support technical assistance, coalition, and partner meetings as needed
Who you are
- Experience conducting policy, legislative, legal, or public policy research
- Highly organized, intellectually curious, and energized by digging into policy details
- Strong project management and organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
- The ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and confidence working across teams
- A passion for advancing equitable criminal justice policy and the mission of the Clean Slate Initiative
- Familiarity working with Asana, Google Workspace, PolicyNote, Airtable, or the equivalent
What success looks like
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date policy tracking systems and legislative resources that teams across CSI rely on
- Deliver high-quality policy research that informs campaign strategy, implementation efforts, and technical assistance
- Keep Policy Department projects organized and on track through strong project management and follow-through
- Become a trusted resource for colleagues by providing timely, accurate responses to policy questions
- Build strong cross-functional relationships and contribute to a collaborative, high-performing Policy team
Challenges & Opportunities
As Clean Slate laws continue to evolve across the states, you'll have the opportunity to build systems, strengthen knowledge management, and become a trusted resource on a rapidly changing policy landscape.
