Dane County Land and Water Resources in Madison, WI has current vacancies for the Limited Term Employee (LTE) Restoration and Land Management Specialist I position. Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week. Note to applicants – for the 2026 budget year, there is a 1% reduction in wages. This is already reflected in the hourly wage above.

Definition and examples of duties. Under the direction of the Botanist/Naturalist and LTE Restoration & Land Management Specialist II, responsible for completing ecological restoration and land management activities on public lands throughout Dane County. Examples of duties include evaluating existing vegetation and site conditions, conducting invasive species removal through multiple methods including herbicide application, weed whacking/mowing, and chainsaw operation, serving as a prescribed burn crew member, including preparing units and post-burn mop-up/monitoring, monitoring work through all phases of restoration, providing project communication through updates, personal contacts, notices and meetings with stakeholders, maintaining work task logs and herbicide use reports, collecting, processing/cleaning, and planting native seed, working cooperatively with volunteers, WI DNR staff, park groups, adjacent landowners, and local municipalities, ensuring project implementation remains compliant with local, state, and federal regulations, assisting in various wildlife surveys including summer deer observation and waterfowl banding activities, and operating and maintaining land management equipment including chainsaws, powered cutters, mowers, UTV/ATVs, sprayers and drip torches.

Education, training and experience. Applicants must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. Special requirements: A valid driver's license and a good driving record required. Final candidate(s) will be subject to passing a thorough driving record background check. Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job's responsibilities. Wisconsin's Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. Physical and environmental work requirements. Ability to routinely lift up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted. Ability to do manual labor, including repetitive lifting, bending, reaching, kneeling and squatting. Work will be primarily outdoors in varying terrains in harsh temperature conditions.
