Associate Specialist - Modality Agnostic Chemistry Scaleup Operations (Alternating Shift)

Merck's Chemical Engineering R&D department seeks an Associate Specialist for operations support at a new modality-agnostic chemistry scaleup facility in Rahway, NJ. The role involves facility startup activities, equipment qualification, operational readiness planning, and pilot-scale batch processing across small molecule and specialty pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Responsibilities
- Support equipment and facility design, material testing, and system commissioning for new MACS Center startup
- Contribute to Operational Readiness program by establishing procedures, documentation, and training protocols
- Execute pilot-scale batch processing including equipment setup, raw material handling, and solution preparation
- Perform wet chemistry operations including reactions, extractions, distillations, crystallizations, and filtration
- Collaborate with development engineers, chemists, and compliance teams on process execution and troubleshooting
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, or Pharmaceutical Sciences plus 1 year relevant experience
- Or Associate degree in Process Technology or related field plus 6 years pharmaceutical/chemical manufacturing experience
- Or High School Diploma/GED plus 8 years pharmaceutical, chemical, or food processing manufacturing experience
- Strong mechanical aptitude and independent problem-solving capability
- Proficiency with technical writing, spreadsheets, graphing, and presentation software
- Effective verbal and written communication with strong organizational skills
- GMP clinical or manufacturing facility experience preferred
