Industrial Hygienist

Summary Position within the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Human Resources Management (HRM), Occupational Safety and Health (OSH). The role will be filled in multiple locations, including Tucson, AZ; San Francisco, CA; Los Angeles, CA; San Diego, CA; Portland, OR; Brownsville, TX; El Paso, TX; Harlingen, TX; Kingsville, TX; McAllen, TX; Rio Grande City, TX; Weslaco, TX; Seattle, WA. Duties The incumbent serves as the headquarters’ expert authority in industrial hygiene, providing technical advice to CBP headquarters leaders, senior management officials, and field supervisors. Responsibilities include: Advising management on findings and corrective actions to reduce health risks. Conducting environmental health and safety surveys, inspections, and program evaluations, including asbestos removal, abatement, operation and maintenance programs, radon testing and remediation, indoor air quality testing, lead in water testing, hazardous materials handling, ergonomics, tuberculosis, blood borne pathogens, confined space entry, and the Hazard Communication Program. Responding to complaints or grievances regarding potential health hazards by conducting studies, inspections, and surveys on illumination, noise, toxic chemicals, air quality, ergonomics, food sanitation, water supply, ventilation, temperature, insect and rodent control, waste disposal, and personal protective equipment. Requirements Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service. Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years is required. The position is subject to background investigation and drug testing per CBP Drug-Free Workplace Plan. Qualifications Individual occupational requirements: Education: A bachelor’s or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or a related science; or a bachelor’s degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science with specified chemistry coursework; or certification from the Board for Global EHS Credentialing. Specialized experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, performing duties such as conducting studies, collecting quantitative and qualitative data, measuring exposures, analyzing data, predicting health effects, and recommending controls. Additional qualification requirements: Meet all educational requirements and time-in-grade requirements. Current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band by 06/22/2026.
