The Scituate School Department seeks an experienced, collaborative, and solutions-oriented Director of Facilities to provide strategic leadership for all district facilities, grounds, maintenance, custodial operations, capital improvement projects, and facility-related operational services.
The Director of Facilities is responsible for ensuring that district buildings and grounds are safe, secure, well-maintained, and support high-quality teaching and learning. The successful candidate will be a visible, hands-on leader who works alongside maintenance and custodial staff while providing strategic direction for the department.
This individual is expected to build strong relationships with principals, teachers, town officials, contractors, and community partners by maintaining an active presence in district buildings and responding proactively to operational needs.
The Director leads by example, balancing day-to-day problem-solving with long-range planning, continuous improvement, and high expectations for customer service and operational excellence.
The Director oversees preventative maintenance and capital planning, manages district construction and renovation projects, ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, and serves as the district's lead administrator for facilities operations, emergency preparedness, and building safety.
This position requires an individual who is equally comfortable developing long-term strategic plans, analyzing operational data, supervising personnel, and responding directly to the daily needs of a busy public school district.
As a member of the district leadership team, the Director works collaboratively with school administrators to align facility planning and operational decisions with the district's strategic priorities.
The Director develops long-term capital and operational strategies, identifies opportunities for innovation and operational efficiencies, and ensures district facilities effectively support teaching, learning, student safety, and community engagement.
Leadership and Operations
Provide leadership and oversight of all district facilities, grounds, maintenance, custodial operations, and building systems.
Supervise, train, mentor, evaluate, and support maintenance and custodial personnel.
Develop staffing schedules, assign work, and monitor productivity through established work order systems.
Foster a culture of customer service, professionalism, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Respond to facility emergencies and provide leadership during after-hours incidents.
Maintain a regular presence in district schools and facilities to proactively identify operational needs, build relationships with staff, and ensure high standards of maintenance and customer service.
Lead by example through a visible, collaborative, and hands-on leadership style while empowering maintenance and custodial staff to take ownership of their work.
Work alongside staff, as appropriate, to assess complex maintenance issues, support emergency responses, and model professionalism, teamwork, and accountability.
Build a department culture that emphasizes responsiveness, preventive maintenance, continuous improvement, and exceptional service to students, staff, and the community.
Facilities Management
Ensure all district buildings, grounds, athletic facilities, and support spaces are clean, safe, secure, and properly maintained.
Develop and implement comprehensive preventative maintenance programs.
Conduct regular inspections of buildings and grounds.
Coordinate repairs and maintenance of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing, life safety systems, security systems, and other building infrastructure.
Oversee district vehicle maintenance as assigned.
Maintain facility inventories and asset management records.
Capital Projects and Construction
In support and collaboration with the Superintendent and the Director of Administration and Finance:
Develop and maintain a comprehensive five-year capital improvement plan.
Serve as the district representative for all construction, renovation, and major capital projects.
Coordinate the work of architects, engineers, Owner's Project Managers, contractors, and consultants.
Monitor project schedules, budgets, quality, and contract compliance.
Prepare reports and recommendations for the Superintendent and capital planning and facility improvements.
Budget and Financial Management
In support and collaboration with the Superintendent and the Director of Administration and Finance:
Develop and manage the district facilities operating budget.
Prepare cost estimates and budget projections.
Review invoices and approve expenditures.
Develop specifications for bids and Requests for Proposals (RFPs).
Ensure compliance with Rhode Island purchasing laws and district procurement procedures.
Seek grants and funding opportunities related to facilities, safety, and energy efficiency.
Safety, Compliance and Risk Management
Includes responsibility for OSHA AHERA Radon Drinking Water Fire Code ADA Playground inspections Indoor Air Quality
Examples include but are not limited to:
Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws governing school facilities.
Administer district compliance programs including AHERA asbestos management, radon testing, drinking water quality, indoor air quality, hazardous materials, and environmental health requirements.
Coordinate annual inspections and required reporting.
Oversee emergency preparedness related to district facilities.
Coordinate snow removal and emergency weather response.
Energy Management and Sustainability
Monitor utility usage and identify opportunities for operational efficiencies.
Lead district energy conservation initiatives.
Work collaboratively with RI Energy and other agencies on rebate and grant opportunities.
Evaluate facility systems to reduce operating costs while improving building performance.
Community Relations
Coordinate community use of school facilities.
Support athletic and community events.
Present reports to the School Committee and Town Council.
Serve on building committees and district planning teams.
Represents the Superintendent in all phases of District operations and on commissions, councils, and committees, as assigned.
Performs related work as required by the Superintendent of Schools.

Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, or closely related field or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience. Five years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management, construction management, public works, or building operations. Supervisory experience. Experience managing capital projects. Experience developing and managing operating budgets. Valid driver's license. Demonstrated success leading facilities operations through a collaborative, service-oriented, and hands-on leadership approach, with the ability to balance strategic planning and administrative responsibilities with active engagement in day-to-day operations. Must possess, or be able to obtain and maintain, any licenses or certifications required to perform the essential functions of the position, including a Rhode Island Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement, as determined by the School Department.
