Principal Consultant

Overview

Appian seeks a Principal Technical Consultant to join our Customer Success team. The role engages with customers post-sales to develop software solutions on the Appian platform, driving digital transformation and competitive differentiation for commercial clients. You will lead projects across the full life-cycle to define, design, develop and implement custom software and AI solutions on Appian’s platform, collaborating with Appian Architects and Technical Delivery Managers, mentoring consultants, and guiding teams through fast-paced implementations. You will brainstorm AI use cases and implement Appian’s AI tools, including retrieval augmented generation (RAG), agentic workflows, prompt engineering, and the latest generative models, to transform how customers operate. You will collaborate with client technical teams and business users to drive adoption and enable customers to build process applications independently.

Responsibilities

• Engage with customers post-sales to understand business processes and technical needs; define, design, and develop solutions on the Appian platform.
• Lead projects through the full project life-cycle in an agile environment; develop relational data models in production and create APIs to integrate with multiple systems.
• Mentor and lead consultants, promote best practices, and ensure successful, on-time delivery of software implementations.
• Collaborate with Appian Architects and Technical Delivery Managers to align architecture and delivery.
• Brainstorm AI use cases and implement AI tooling (RAG, agentic workflows, prompt engineering, generative models) to drive client outcomes.
• Work with client teams and business users throughout the software development life cycle and drive adoption by enabling self-sufficiency in building process applications.
• Support travel to client sites as required and maintain strong client relationships.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of hands-on software development or technical consulting experience.
• B.S./B.A. in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics or related field.
• Willingness to travel; travel expected ~20% or less annually to support customer engagement.
• Passion for mentoring and developing others; experience leading teams through post-sale software implementation.
• Ability to work with clients to define business processes and gather functional and technical requirements.
• Excellent communication skills, a passion for technology and continuous learning, and an aptitude for asking “why” and solving the right problems.
• Experience with agile methodologies; familiarity with pair programming, stand-ups, planning sessions, and sprints.
• Basic understanding of object-oriented programming; experience with relational databases, data modeling, and SQL.
• Knowledge of software testing practices (test-driven development, automated test suites, CI) and integrations using APIs (REST, SOAP); familiarity with AWS, AI, analytics, ML, Google Cloud, and containerization is preferred.

Compensation and Benefits

• Base salary range: $100,000 – $225,000 USD. Actual compensation depends on experience and other factors. A discretionary bonus may be awarded.
