Controls Technician

Day SHIFT

The Controls Technician supports manufacturing operations by troubleshooting, maintaining, and improving electrical control and automation systems across multiple facilities. This position requires hands-on experience with industrial electrical systems, PLCs, HMIs, control wiring, and equipment troubleshooting.

The role is primarily based at a manufacturing facility in Wisconsin and will provide remote technical support to an additional Midwest location, with periodic travel as needed. The Controls Technician will also work closely with the maintenance and engineering teams to improve equipment reliability, minimize downtime, and support safe and efficient plant operations.

Responsibilities & Duties

• Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair industrial control systems, PLCs, HMIs, and related electrical equipment.
• Perform control wiring, electrical installations, modifications, and repairs on manufacturing equipment.
• Provide remote troubleshooting and technical support to other company facilities.
• Travel periodically to another Midwest facility for hands-on technical support.
• Support plant maintenance with electrical, controls, and equipment-related repairs.
• Perform preventive maintenance on electrical and automation systems to improve equipment reliability.
• Assist with control system upgrades, equipment installations, and continuous improvement projects.
• Work closely with maintenance, engineering, production, and other departments to resolve equipment issues.
• Maintain accurate documentation, including electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment records, and programming changes.
• Follow established safety, quality, and maintenance procedures during all work activities.
• Participate in an emergency on-call rotation as required.

Core Competencies

• Strong electrical and controls troubleshooting skills within an industrial manufacturing environment.
• Hands-on knowledge of Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMIs, including diagnostics and basic programming.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
• Knowledge of industrial electrical wiring, installation, troubleshooting, and repair practices.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to use electrical and mechanical hand tools.
• Effective communication and teamwork skills with the ability to support multiple departments and locations.
• Ability to prioritize troubleshooting and maintenance activities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with at least 2 years of relevant maintenance experience; an associate degree with at least 1 year of related experience may also be considered.
• At least 2 years of experience working with electrical controls, industrial automation, or related systems.
• Formal technical education, certification, or coursework in electrical technology, industrial electricity, HVAC, high-voltage systems, automation, or a related field preferred.
• Previous experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment involving machine maintenance, facility maintenance, equipment repair, equipment installation, or preventive maintenance.
• Hands-on experience troubleshooting Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMIs.
• Working knowledge of industrial electrical wiring, controls, and repair techniques.
• Proficiency with electrical and mechanical hand tools and diagnostic equipment.
• Ability to work effectively across maintenance, engineering, production, and other functional departments.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and perform a variety of maintenance and technical responsibilities.
• Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and perform physical maintenance activities, including climbing ladders and working at elevated heights.
• Ability and willingness to travel periodically between company facilities.

Work Location & Travel

• Primarily based at a manufacturing facility in southern Wisconsin.
• Provides remote support to an additional manufacturing facility in the Midwest.
• Periodic travel to the supported facility, generally several times per year or as business needs require.
• Participation in an emergency on-call rotation is required.
