Job Description

Title: BEHAVIOR SUPPORT SPECIALIST

Position Type: Exempt

Primary Function:

Provides support and services to teachers, administrators, and school-based teams for students with emotional disabilities, behavioral disorders, and other disabilities who are demonstrating interfering behaviors to the extent they create significant barriers to their learning and the learning of others.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A Virginia teaching license; three years' experience as a teacher or administrator providing special education services; or any equivalent combination of training and experience working with students with emotional disabilities and/or behavioral disorders which would provide the acceptable knowledge, skills and abilities, as evidenced in the following performance responsibilities.
• Possess a valid Virginia Driver's license

Preferred Qualifications :

• Administrative endorsement
• Hold a professional license with endorsement in Special Education
• Postgraduate degree

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Demonstrate a willingness to work with all students.
• Considerable knowledge of and ability to teach and model the use of evidence-based practices for teaching social and behavioral skills.
• Proven leadership skills with faculty and students; possess high moral standards and integrity.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate, establish trust, and collaborate effectively with school and division-based teams, families, and members of the community.
• Ability to accept and deal professionally and effectively with conflict and supervisory and stakeholder feedback.
• Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
• Ability to collect, review, and analyze data related to behaviors and determine appropriate evidence-based interventions.
• Ability to quickly learn procedures used to report information and maintain records.
• Ability to travel to more than one work location in the course of the day.
• Sufficient mobility to perform duties as assigned.

Performance Responsibilities:

• Works with school-based teams on case-by-case basis to identify appropriate supports for students demonstrating interfering behaviors.
• Assists and support the implementation of evidence-based practices in the Behavior and Communication Support Programs.
• Researches and applies diverse academic and behavioral interventions.
• Provides professional development related to behavioral strategies.
• Collaborates with community and/or state agencies to refer students for community-based resources.
• Assists school-based teams in meetings for students demonstrating interfering behaviors, including but not limited to IEP meetings to consider appropriate behavior strategies, evidence-based practices, and least restrictive environment.
• Assists school-based teams in the development of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) for students.
• Assists school-based teams in resolving student conflicts and managing crises.
• Maintains certification as an instructor and provides division-wide training in de-escalation and crisis intervention training.
• Monitors division wide discipline data of students with disabilities as recorded in student management system.
• Assists in ensuring appropriate student conduct consistent with school standards and division policies.
• Assists in developing position school-community relations with students, staff, and parents.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Terms of Employment:

Twelve months a year. Salary according to School Board Pay Plan

Evaluation:

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of licensed personnel.
