Read below to learn more about the position and to submit your application. This is skilled mechanical work in the preventive maintenance and repair of city owned vehicles and equipment. Work involves responsibility for the performance of skilled tasks in the preventative maintenance and mechanical repair of a variety of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and specialized equipment. Work includes preventative maintenance, diagnosis and repair of City owned vehicles and equipment. Please note, that this position is under the United Steelworkers (USW) Union, as such, a successful candidate would start at Step 1 and earn $30.53/hr. The regular work hours for this position are M - F, 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM.

Supervision

Employee works under general supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor. Assignments are received in the form of work orders and employee must be able to use independent judgment in diagnosis and repair. Work is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion and through performance appraisals.

Essential Functions Of Work

• Maintains and repairs a variety of city owned vehicles and heavy equipment; performs monthly preventative maintenance; makes scheduled and unscheduled repairs on equipment.
• Diagnoses mechanical and electrical malfunctions and makes necessary repairs; overhauls engines, transmissions, clutch assemblies, power takeoffs, differentials, and front and rear end assemblies; repairs and replaces hydraulic pumps, lines, connections, and hydraulic cylinders, brakes, cooling, ignition, electrical and fuel systems.
• Tunes and repairs gasoline and diesel engines; replaces cylinder heads and gaskets; grinds valves; turns brake rotors and drums.
• Operates equipment while performing preventative maintenance or repairs such as drill presses, diagnostic equipment, welder, torches, brake lathe, computer analyzer, on-board computer, floor jacks, hoists, overhead crane, tire machine to balance tires, power grinders, saws, air equipment, impact wrenches, chisels, drills, and hand tools etc.
• Determines required parts for maintenance or repairs; calls vendors; locates parts; prices required parts; makes order if necessary; picks up and delivers parts to the garage; designs and manufactures necessary equipment for vehicles such as trailers when necessary; fabricates parts.
• Schedules city vehicles and equipment for repairs; maintains records of all repairs and general maintenance to vehicles and other equipment; completes a work order after each repair; delivers vehicles for warranty and sublet repairs.
• Assists other mechanics when requested; communicates verbally and in writing with vendors, outside agencies, employees, departments etc.
• Maintains a professional working relationship with other repair centers; makes contacts concerning difficult repairs or diagnostic problems; maintains a clean work environment in shop area.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements Of Work

• Possession of a high school diploma and three years experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicle and mechanical equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
• Considerable knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, terminology, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
• Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
• Ability to diagnose defects in equipment and vehicles.
• Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
• Ability to drive various types of vehicles.
• Ability to design and manufacture necessary equipment for vehicles.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to interpret and work from service manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
• Ability to maneuver in and around vehicles and equipment with hands and body.
• Ability to climb up into large trucks and equipment.
• Ability to visually detect leaks, hairline cracks, breaks in engine and automotive parts.
• Ability to use wrenches to pull, remove, tighten, and extract hydraulic and other automotive parts.
• Ability to lay on creeper and work underneath automotive vehicles.
• Ability to use welding equipment to fabricate parts.
• Ability to use hydraulic jacks both manually and under power.

Necessary Special Requirements

• Possession of a valid Ohio commercial driver's license. Possession of a CDL is not a requirement to obtain this position but the candidate will need to obtain a CDL within their first year. Training is provided by the City.
• Vehicle and Truck Certification or Mechanic Certification ASE.
• Possession of own tools to complete repairs and maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
