Maintenance Worker, Water

Job Title

The purpose of this classification is to perform unskilled, manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance, landscaping, and grounds-keeping of city infrastructure, utilities, facilities, and property.

Examples of Duties

Performs manual work functions associated with routine maintenance and upkeep of public grounds and facilities: mows lawns; trims and edges grass; blows leaves from walkways; plants, prunes, and maintains plants, trees and shrubs; spreads mulch; rakes leaves; clears debris; and performs related tasks. Transports, loads and unloads various materials and equipment used in projects; stock work trucks with needed supplies and equipment. Responds to emergency calls during inclement weather or other emergency situations. Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals. Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fuel and fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. Obtains property measurements, sets stakes, and cuts projects and lines; holds rod and uses chain during surveying; updates records. Receives, prepares or completes various forms and documentation, including work orders, time cards, maintenance reports, spray records, diagrams, maps, manuals, reference materials, and other documents; reviews, completes, processes, files, forwards or retains as appropriate. Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.

Typical Qualifications

High school diploma or GED, and previous work experience is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid driver's license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver's license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment for this classification. May be required to obtain Flagging certification.
