Medical Dosimetrist

The Medical Dosimetrist works under the supervision of the Medical Physicist and Radiation Oncologist to create, calculate and implement treatment parameters derived from a physician's prescription. Provides radiation dose distribution plans to the radiation oncologist and is competent in showing effects of beam modifying devices (blocks, wedges, bolus, etc.) to optimize dose distribution to a tumor volume. Must be capable and competent of operating radiation-producing equipment utilizing radiation safety measures. Must be able to perform a series of complex and precise technical procedures.

Responsibilities

• Designs a treatment plan by means of computer and/or manual computation that will deliver a prescribed radiation dose and field placement technique in accordance with the radiation oncologist's prescription to a defined tumor volume.

• Performs routine duties independent of supervision, in consultation with the radiation oncologist and medical physicist as required. Assists the medical physicist in carrying out the physics and dosimetry quality assurance program.

• Considers dose-limiting structures in the design of treatment plans and document dose in accordance with the radiation oncologist's prescription.

• Coordinates treatment simulations and tumor localization on dedicated devices, including CT, MRI, and PET when indicated, for radiation oncology treatment planning.

• Consults, performs, and assists in the planning and/or fabrication of custom shields and other beam modifying and/or immobilization devices.

• Consults with therapist staff in the implementation of the treatment plan including: the correct use of immobilization devices, field arrangement and other treatment variables.

• Performs calculations for the accurate delivery of the radiation oncologist's prescribed dose, document all pertinent information in the patient record, and verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations using a system established by the medical physicist.

• Plans intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy procedures and in the subsequent manual and/or computer calculation of the dose distributions of these treatments were indicated.

• Maintains compliance with State and ACR/HFAP requirements regarding radiation safety and protection for patients and staff. Attend scheduled in-services to review policy/procedure and safety measures.

• Contribute to the development of students in the department and is responsible for teaching and completing dosimetry competencies. Performs and documents proper charge capture for all procedures performed.

• Provides for the age specific needs of the population served according to department standards and policies/procedures as evidenced by observation, documentation and peer feedback.

• Update dose contracts annually. Perform IMRT, VMAT, 3D and electron planning. Calculate QA plan in the planning system. Responsible for all HDR Brachy therapy plans.

• SBRT and SRS planning with Brain Lab system.

• MROQC data entry, audits, planning, goals and data collection.

• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred. Must be registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) ARRT Registered Radiation Therapist. Must be Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certified.

• Board Certified Medical Dosimetrist (CMD) preferred. If not certified, required to pursue Board Certification after the 2-year minimum requirement. Require Board Certification (CMD) by 4 years serving as a medical dosimetrist.

• 2 years' radiation oncology dosimetry experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES

• Thorough understanding of proper billing practices and use site specific office management system for scheduling and billing.

• Possesses working knowledge of radiation safety and current rules and regulations of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

• Has the ability to interpret and execute treatment plans as defined in relevant treatment protocols.

• Possesses mathematical skills including algebra, trigonometry and introductory calculus and be able to visualize objects in three-dimensional concepts to facilitate the treatment planning process.

• Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with others in person and on the telephone.
