Zoological Specialist, Senior 1 (Aquarist)

Overview At SeaWorld, we care deeply about animals and have rescued over 40,000. We are looking for enthusiastic Ambassadors to maintain and promote the health of fish and other aquatic life in our aquarium exhibits. Responsibilities Maintain husbandry of fish and other aquatic life, including preparing food and feeding animals. Perform aquarium maintenance such as algae removal, display diving, aquarium decorating, preventive maintenance, and pump replacement. Conduct basic water quality testing, add chemicals, make up salt water, and test pH and temperature. Apply knowledge of aquarium husbandry techniques, taxonomy, record keeping, filtration, theory, and emergency procedures. Monitor aquarium health, identify and treat parasites, and implement quarantine procedures as needed. Assist with animal collection and repair of aquarium filtration systems. Answer guest questions regarding aquarium animals and provide animal transports within and outside the park. Follow park safety protocols and perform safety checks. Communicate professionally and effectively with fellow Ambassadors, vendors, and guests. Perform other duties as assigned. Provide flexible availability to support year‑round operations, including openings, mid‑day, and closing shifts, weekends and holidays. Qualifications Minimum age 18 years. High school diploma. At least 18 months of experience in a similar public aquarium setting. Knowledge of food preparation and feeding techniques. Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in marine science or a related field. Preferred: SCUBA certification. Valid driver’s license. Strong communication, math, guest service, and multitasking skills. Physical Demands and Work Conditions Lift, push, pull and/or carry up to 50 lbs. Extensive walking, standing, and climbing/ascending heights as needed. Perform kneeling, squatting, bending, reaching overhead, and fine hand manipulation tasks. Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather, including extreme heat. Exposure to fumes, dust, odors, and temperature extremes. Perform cleaning duties with cleaning chemicals. Work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays. May need to work new locations based on business needs. Experience Levels Associate: Entry level. Specialist: Minimum 12 months (2,080 hours) of professional zoological experience. Senior: Minimum 2.5 years (5,200 hours) of professional zoological experience. Senior 1: Minimum 5 years (10,400 hours) of professional zoological experience.
