Job Title: PhlebotomistJob Description
This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collection in busy physician office settings that serve patients of all ages, with a strong emphasis on geriatric care. You will collect, label, process, and store specimens in accordance with established procedures and regulatory standards, while providing clear, courteous explanations of the collection process to patients. The position requires accurate handling of laboratory requisitions, use of centrifuges and other equipment to prepare specimens for testing and transport, and diligent documentation and data entry to maintain patient records and laboratory integrity.
Responsibilities
Perform venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures (including blood, urine, and fecal specimens) in a clear, courteous, and professional manner for patients of all ages, with frequent interaction with geriatric patients.
Explain the blood draw and specimen collection process to patients in a way that is easy to understand, helping to reduce anxiety and ensure cooperation.
Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles, following all clinical and safety protocols.
Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, ensuring that each sample is handled in a way that maintains its integrity.
Match laboratory requisition forms or computer-generated labels to specimen tubes, verifying that all information is accurate and complete.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, following detailed protocols to prepare samples for analysis.
Package specimens for transport, including placing samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes, maintaining required temperatures, and following designated procedures to preserve specimen quality.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the original orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing or transport.
Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures on equipment and work areas as required, maintaining a clean and safe laboratory environment.
Update patient information and related data in laboratory or clinic systems with accuracy and attention to detail.
Answer telephone calls and respond to inquiries, including reading and communicating laboratory results when appropriate and in accordance with protocols.
Fully understand and follow physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection, seeking clarification when necessary to avoid errors.
Attend annual department trainings and other required educational sessions to stay current with procedures, regulations, and best practices.
Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards, including proper use of personal protective equipment and safe handling of biohazardous materials.
Work collaboratively with a team of clinical and administrative staff in physician offices to support efficient patient flow and high-quality care.
Maintain professionalism and a patient-focused attitude while performing 20–40 blood draws per day in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Skills
Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states.
Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
2–4 years of overall experience in a clinical or related healthcare environment.
Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
Hands-on experience performing blood draws for patients of varying ages, including geriatric patients.
Ability to accurately label specimens and match laboratory requisitions or computer labels to specimen tubes.
Experience centrifuging specimens, splitting and freezing samples, and preparing them according to test orders.
Ability to record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures on equipment and work surfaces.
Experience updating patient information and handling data entry in clinical or laboratory systems.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
Understanding of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety standards.
High school diploma or GED.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Experience working in physician clinic settings, particularly those serving geriatric populations.
Comfort interacting with patients of all ages, including pediatric and adult populations.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining 100% accuracy in specimen labeling and requisition matching.
Effective communication skills for explaining procedures to patients and answering telephone inquiries professionally.
Ability to learn and adhere to specific laboratory protocols for specimen collection, processing, storage, and transport.
Willingness to participate in ongoing training and annual department sessions to maintain and enhance skills.
Ability to work efficiently in a busy environment with a high volume of daily blood draws while maintaining quality and patient care standards.
Work Environment
This position is based in physician office settings in multiple locations, including DeSoto, KS; Paola, KS; Spring Hill, KS; and Lee’s Summit, MO. The environment is fairly large and fast-paced, with a high volume of daily patient visits and an increased number of physicians, which creates a strong need for additional phlebotomy support. You will work as part of a collaborative team rather than alone, and you will spend most of your shift standing and performing blood draws, typically completing 20–40 draws per day. The patient population spans all ages, with a particular focus on geriatric care. The first week of employment is dedicated to orientation and training to familiarize you with procedures, systems, and safety requirements. Dress is consistent with a professional clinical setting, and you will use standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and computer systems for documentation and label generation.
