Mechanic Lead: General Maintenance

Performs skilled general maintenance tasks and leads a small group of employees engaged in the general maintenance of school facilities. Performs a variety of repairs and installations related to building structure, roofing, and interior/exterior components/finishes. Ability to work flexible schedules, emergencies, evenings/nights, extended hours, holidays, inclement weather conditions, on call, outside of normal business hours, overtime as needed, peak season, shift work, summer hours, weekends.

Installs and repairs floor finishes and metal framed or drywall partitions and specialty items such as chalkboards, bulletin boards, smart boards, bleachers (exterior, interior), lockers, toilet partitions, overhead doors, folding partitioning. Evaluates, installs, and repairs various types of roofing materials, flashing, exterior trim, soffit, fascias, gutters, and down spouts. Serves as a lead worker and lays out work for self and other members of the crew. May assist with scheduling, assigning, and completing the more complex work assignments. Advises management of issues that will require collaboration with other departments for completion of tasks. Cuts, fits, and joins lumber and plastic laminate in the construction and repair of cabinetry, bookcases, and countertops. Performs sizing, mortising, boring, fitting, and hanging wood door blanks; sizing, ordering, and hanging metal doors. Repairs and replaces T&G ceiling tile, suspended ceiling tile, grid, masonry block, brick, and concrete. Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required. Five (5) years progressively responsible general maintenance/construction or related experience and required; One (1) year experience or training in the assigning and scheduling of work duties in a lead capacity and required; One (1) year welding experience preferred. Intermediate knowledge of construction methods and procedures. Intermediate carpentry skills to include layout, framing, and sheathing. Ability to oversee the work of others as a leader and make independent judgments and decisions within established parameters. Ability to use various shop and hand power tools including saws, drills, woodworking, and welding machines. Ability to interpret work orders, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, drawings and specifications, and manufacturer's manuals. Ability to practice and enforce safety regulations applicable to work performed. Knowledge of procedures and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials. Possess excellent interpersonal and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations. Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrollment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.). Provides basic hand tools. Upon hire, Driver's License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required. Proof of a good driving record required. Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position. Board Vehicle.

Lead Worker. This position acts as the lead for 1 to 5 direct staff. Trains employees. Directs the work of employees. Maintains records. Provides feedback to assist the supervisor's assessment of the employee's performance. Plans the work. Instructs employees in specific techniques and technical methods to use. Performs same type of work as employees the Lead Worker is assigned to lead.

The employee is responsible for correcting and/or reporting any conditions within an AACPS building or grounds that may be hazardous to employees and students.
