Job Description
Reporting to the Hospital President and the Vice President of Perioperative Services for the Mount
Sinai Health System, the Vice President of Perioperative Services for Mount Sinai Hospital is
responsible for the clinical services within Perioperative Services. Accountability includes overall
planning for nursing and multidisciplinary patient care delivery to ensure high quality professional
nursing practice and multidisciplinary patient care through the development of mission, vision,
strategic plans, quality assessment and improvement programs; education and research efforts;
patient care standards; and resource allocation and financial management to assure quality of
patient care.
Qualifications
• Minimum of 10 years of leadership in a large, matrixed company or organization in Health
Care.
• Education: Bachelors and Master’s in Nursing Care or Master’s Degree or Medical
Doctorate required
• Certification: CNOR, ANCC-Advanced by American Nurses Association or Board
certification in medical specialty, or certification in area of clinical expertise preferred.
• Experience: Demonstrated competence and success in the management of a
multidisciplinary team in an academic medical center; demonstrated ability to apply
knowledge of current leadership/management concepts; ability to work collaboratively in
the health care milieu of the organization to support the system mission of the Department
of Perioperative and Procedural services as well as the organization as a whole.
Compensation
The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $275,000.00 - 350,000.00. Yearly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Hospital President and the Vice President of Perioperative Services for the Mount
Sinai Health System, the Vice President of Perioperative Services for Mount Sinai Hospital is
responsible for the clinical services within Perioperative Services. Accountability includes overall
planning for nursing and multidisciplinary patient care delivery to ensure high quality professional
nursing practice and multidisciplinary patient care through the development of mission, vision,
strategic plans, quality assessment and improvement programs; education and research efforts;
patient care standards; and resource allocation and financial management to assure quality of
patient care.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Administration
• Represents Nursing and Multidisciplinary Patient Care Services in the hospital
administrative structure.
• Supports the Vice President of Perioperative Services for the Mount Sinai Health System
in executing system strategy for Perioperative Services.
• Participates with leaders of the governing bodies, management, nursing, medical and
clinical staff in the Hospital's decision-making structures and processes.
• Participates with leaders of the governing bodies, management, nursing, medical and
clinical staff in the planning, development, and implementation of the following for
Perioperative Services:
- The mission, strategic plan and operations, policies and procedures and allocation
of resources including sustainability and waste reduction
quality assessment, monitoring, and improvement programs
patient staff and safety and experience improvement programs.
Risk management programs
• Responsible for the establishment and upholding of standards of nursing and
multidisciplinary performance in a collaborative, patient-centered model.
• Participates in evaluating, selecting, and integrating health care technology and
information management systems that support patient care needs and the efficient use of
resources.
• Uses data, dashboards, and metrics to understand and drive performance.
• Strong project management skills including prioritization and problem-solving.
• Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and complex projects simultaneously.
• Maintains discretion and confidentiality.
• Participates in hospital administrative systems to coordinate requirements for patient care
with available resources.
- Participates in establishing new programs to assure adequacy of patient care
resources.
- Facilitates decisions relative to admission/transfer of patients to assure the ability
of clinical staff to assess and meet patient care needs.
• Participates in or chairs committees, work groups, and meetings as appropriate to support
needed work including the MSH OR Committee.
• Develops, in collaboration with administrators and other professional disciplines, hospital wide
patient care standards, policies, and procedures which describe how the care needs of
patients are assessed, evaluated and met.
• Is open and responsive to the diverse backgrounds and experience of other people and
promotes an environment that is sensitive to cultural diversity.
• Collaborates with community and governmental policy-making bodies as appropriate.
• Participates in and assumes leadership roles in professional organizations and provides
opportunities for staff participation.
• Participates with leaders from governing body, management, nursing, medical and clinical
staff, in planning for adequate physical facilities including buildings and equipment which
are suitable to serve the mission of the hospital.
• Formulates annual goals for Perioperative services consistent with the overall annual goals
of the health system and hospital.
Human Resources Development
• Initiates, develops and implements mechanisms for collaboration between nurses, clinical
staff members, physicians and other practitioners.
• Develops, implements and evaluate programs to promote recruitment and retention of
hospital staff.
• Collaborates with leaders from the governing body, management, nursing, medical and
clinical staff in the development of clinical staff members.
• Assures the establishment of appropriate education programs of orientation; ongoing staff
education; development of clinical leadership and management skills; and continuing
education.
• Provides application of collective bargaining agreements with the New York State Nurses
Association and 1199/SEIU representatives.
• Interprets and implements all aspects of the HR personnel policies.
• Assures ongoing performance appraisals for all patient care staff within Perioperative
Services.
• Coordinates educational outreach through the development of mentoring programs;
provision of student and graduate educational experiences, in collaboration with
institutions of higher learning, in nursing and other professions.
Fiscal Management
• Participates with leaders from the governing body, management, nursing, medical and
clinical staff in the ongoing development and review of the budget for Perioperative
Services.
• Responsible for the formulation and monitoring of a financial plan and resource allocation
within clinical specialty service of Perioperative Services.
• Assures systems are implemented for adherence to the budgetary and financial plan for the
Hospital.
Research
• Develops and implements strategic applicable goals and initiatives for The Center for
Nursing Research and Education, the Icahn School of Medicine, and other clinical
endeavors as appropriate.
• Determines and supports the nursing and medical research direction for Perioperative
Services.
• Identifies and supports clinical research studies and projects which are designed to improve
the delivery of patient care.
• Supports and encourages collaborative research studies and projects to improve the
delivery of patient care through the Center for Nursing Research and Education and the
medical departments within Perioperative Services.
• Assures compliance with IRB and Compliance standards, rules and regulations.
Professional
• Enhances multidisciplinary staff relationships by promoting professional behavior,
leadership skills, problem-solving ability, coaching guidance, and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to communicate
effectively with all levels of personnel within the organization.
• Demonstrates visionary leadership through the development and implementation of
strategic plans for the current era of healthcare.
• Participates in the Magnet designation process within all levels of patient care delivery
insuring excellence in nursing practice in Perioperative Services.
• Supports programs to promote global nursing and multidisciplinary practice through
collaboration, innovation and demonstration of best practices.
• Participates in the activities of the healthcare profession through membership, committee
leadership, lectures and panel presentations on international, national, state and local levels.
• Publishes in professional health related periodicals.
• Serves as consultant for university affiliations and other outside services for pertinent
nursing and health care issues.
