About the Role

We are seeking a dependable, patient, and compassionate Autism Support Respite Specialist to provide non-medical respite care for a young autistic child with ongoing support needs.

This role provides important family relief while ensuring the child receives safe, structured, and supportive care in both home and community settings.

The specialist will supervise, engage, and support the child through daily routines, community outings, and structured activities designed to promote safety, comfort, and positive experiences.

This is a part-time, ongoing position with a consistent evening schedule.

Schedule

• 30 hours per month
• 2 evenings per week
• 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM
• Ongoing assignment

This schedule is generally consistent, with occasional adjustments based on family needs.

Additional hours may become available in the future.

About the Child

The child is autistic and benefits from routine, consistency, and sensory-based activities.

He enjoys:

• Going to parks and outdoor activities
• Feeling fresh air and wind on his face
• Water-based activities and swimming
• Swinging and playground activities
• Sensory-friendly environments
• Home-based play and structured activities

The specialist will help create positive, structured experiences while maintaining safety, engagement, and predictability.

Recognizing Early Cues

The child may show early signs of frustration or sensory overload before becoming upset. These signs may include:

• Increased restlessness, pacing, or running
• Becoming less engaged
• Seeking to leave an activity or go outside
• Increased sensory-seeking behaviors
• Difficulty transitioning between activities
• Sensitivity to loud noises, crowded environments, or temperature changes

When these early cues are noticed, the specialist should use calm redirection and supportive strategies such as:

• Offering outdoor time or fresh air
• Engaging in a preferred activity
• Providing a calm, low-stimulation environment
• Offering sensory-based regulation activities

Early support helps prevent escalation whenever possible.

Responsibilities

• Provide continuous supervision and ensure safety at all times
• Support structured activities at home and in the community
• Take the child to parks, outdoor activities, and sensory-friendly outings
• Pick the child up from therapy appointments and transport him home safely
• Assist with personal care, including dressing, toileting, feeding, and hygiene as needed
• Prepare simple meals and snacks
• Follow care instructions provided by the family and agency
• Maintain a calm, supportive, and structured environment
• Communicate appropriately with the family and agency

Qualifications

• Must be 18 years or older
• Experience working with children required
• Experience supporting children with autism strongly preferred
• Experience as a Direct Support Professional (DSP), Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), paraprofessional, special education aide, or respite provider highly preferred
• CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain upon hire
• Valid driver’s license required
• Reliable transportation required
• Clean driving record preferred
• Comfortable supporting children with developmental, communication, and sensory needs
• Patient, dependable, and able to work independently
• Strong communication skills

Compensation

$17.00–$20.00 per hour, depending on experience
