About the Position

Job Title: ICU Registered Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: CVICU Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years in CVICU License: Active Illinois RN license or confirmation of application process Certifications: BLS required; ACLS preferred; CCRN a plus Must-Have: - 2 solid years of CVICU experience - Ability to care for complex patients independently - Strong assessment skills and critical thinking - Effective communication and organizational skills - Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment - Familiarity with interpreting heart rhythms - Compassionate demeanor and positive attitude Description: The unit consists of 20 beds that are all private and monitored. Nurse to patient ratios vary from 1:1, 1:2, to 2:1 based on patient acuity. The patient population includes post open-heart surgical patients, such as CABG, valves, dissections, and vascular procedures. Common conditions involve STEMI, unstable angina, cardiogenic shock, and severe heart failure. The nurse will manage patients requiring intensive cardiovascular care, including ventilated patients. Specialty intervention equipment utilized includes IABPs, Impellas, Swan Ganz catheters, and ECMO. Lines commonly used include PICC, midlines, central venous catheters, and arterial lines. Nurses are required to titrate various medications such as dopamine, dobutamine, vasopressors, and sedation agents. Charge nurses and house supervisors are present 24/7 to support the staff. Patient care techs assist on the unit; their ratio can run from 1:12 to 1:15. Respiratory therapists are available 24/7 for patient support and equipment management. All patients are connected to monitoring systems, and nurses are expected to interpret the data. Shift schedules are fixed, and staff are required to work every other weekend and holiday. Travelers are expected to float to various levels of care and manage a full patient load. Scrubs should be appropriate in appearance, clean, and not overly tight or loose. The ideal candidate will be proficient in cardiovascular ICU competencies, including the use of temporary pacemakers and titrating medications. The unit frequently cares for patients with multiple complex needs, requiring a high level of nursing skill and adaptability.
