PURPOSE OF THE CLASSIFICATION:
The Fire Department Mechanic II performs highly skilled mechanical work maintaining and repairing the City of Muskogee’s fire emergency response fleet. This includes fire apparatus, fireboats, support pickups, and SUVs to ensure all fire emergency vehicles meet strict safety and operational standards.
ESSENTIAL TASKS:
- Perform routine and corrective maintenance on fire engines, ladder trucks, rescue squads, and fireboats.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in support pickups, command SUVs, and utility vehicles.
- Execute complex engine, transmission, brake, and steering repairs.
- Troubleshoot specialized emergency systems including fire pumps, foam systems, aerial ladders, and emergency lighting.
- Conduct standard PM services like oil changes, fluid flushes, safety inspections, and tune-ups on all fire department fleet assets.
- Maintain accurate digital and physical logs of all repairs, parts used, and labor hours in the fleet tracking system.
- Performs on-scene emergency field repairs during major incidents or after-hours call-outs as required
- Operates welding equipment, cutting torches and other related equipment.
- Changes and repairs tires on passenger and heavy vehicles; changes oil; puts gasoline or diesel fuel in vehicles.
- Repairs, replaces and maintains electrical and electronic systems including sensors, headlights and taillights; replaces batteries.
- Makes emergency service calls.
- Attends training and safety meetings to ensure proper methods and work practices.
- Learns to operate new technologies as they are developed and implemented.
- Performs other work as necessary and or as assigned.
- Must report to work on a regular and timely basis.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
The Fire Garage Automotive Mechanic II reports directly to the Vehicle & Equipment Management Leader II.
The Fire Garage Automotive Mechanic II does not have any direct reports or supervisory responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Training and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent plus three (3) to five (5) years experience required in gasoline, diesel and hydraulic mechanics including two years at the journeyman level performing repairs on construction and other heavy equipment required or an equivalent combination of education (such as graduation from an automotive trade school) and experience. Consideration will be given to internal candidates who do not possess a high school diploma or GED but who possess at least four additional years above the required years of experience in the automotive service trade.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Must have detailed knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform required automotive, heavy equipment or power equipment maintenance, inspection and repair functions; knowledge of vehicle electrical and hydro systems. Must have strong knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, air brake systems, and heavy-duty suspensions. Familiarity with marine propulsion (for fire boats) and complex hydraulic systems is highly preferred. Proficiency with modern diagnostic scanners, welding equipment, hand tools, and heavy shop machinery is needed. Must be able to maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees. Ability to read and write; ability to read and understand service manuals; ability to work long and sometimes irregular hours under difficult conditions. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and maintain repair and parts records. Performance tests on mechanical skills and oral tests on knowledge may be given.

While performing the duties of this job, arm and hand steadiness and finger dexterity will be needed enough to use a key board and telephone. Occasional sitting and standing is required. Frequent lifting and carrying of objects up to fifty (50) pounds. Occasional lifting up to 80 pounds, reaching, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, twisting, handling and repetitive movements. Vision, speech, and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks. Punctuality and reasonable attendance is essential. Must submit to drug screening and fitness to work physical exam.
Licenses and Certificates: Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class B CDL is required. Must be able to obtain and maintain Emergency Vehicle Technician Certifications, F-1 through F-6. Must obtain 2 of these certifications per year or not to exceed 5 years. Progress toward standard Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) medium/heavy truck certifications is preferred.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work in this classification is both indoors and outdoors. Will travel to other City locations as required.
