Police Officer

Summary This position will serve as a Police Officer at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC. The Police Officer will perform a full range of police duties by following and executing rules, regulations, or procedures covering law enforcement, physical and personal security operations, patrol duties, control desk duty, coordination with local courts, and crime prevention activities for the local jurisdiction. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Applicants may qualify based on experience and/or education as described below: At least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service, including maintaining order, taking initial complaints, interviewing witnesses, securing a crime scene, conducting limited searches, responding to emergencies, gathering information, preparing reports, conducting routine patrol, traffic control, and traffic accident investigations. Driver’s license: valid unrestricted State driver’s license, safe driving record, and medical clearance to operate a vehicle safely. Firearms: must possess firearms under the terms of the Gun Control Act of 1968 and achieve and maintain qualification with VA‑approved firearms as a condition of employment. Completed the 8‑week VA Law Enforcement Training Center course in Little Rock, Arkansas (satisfactory completion is a condition of continued employment). Physical examination and psychological assessment requirements met. Character investigation indicates honesty, integrity, and loyalty to the U.S. Government. Physical Requirements The work requires regular, strenuous physical exertion such as running, climbing multiple flights of stairs, carrying items over 50 pounds, and pursuing or detaining individuals. The position demands stamina, agility, dexterity, and strength. Work Schedule 12‑shift rotating day/night schedule. 80 hours biweekly. Work weekends, irregular hours, and extended hours as required. Potential details or temporary assignments to related services or locations. Duties Protect the civil rights of all individuals on VA controlled property. Prevent, detect, and investigate crimes. Patrol assigned areas on foot or by motor vehicle. Subdue persons causing disturbance or who threaten harm to themselves or others. Follow procedures concerning search and seizure of evidence and contraband. Obtain search and arrest warrants. Arrest violators. Provide basic first aid and CPR until emergency medical personnel arrive. Prepare reports of activities and events that occurred during the shift. Perform traffic control. Assist citizens in emergency situations. Perform other related duties as assigned.
