Chief Financial Officer

Overview

Our client in El Cajon is hiring a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) who is accountable for the financial health, integrity, and strategic direction of the organization. This role leads all finance and accounting operations, including financial planning, compliance, audit, and reporting.

The CFO drives financial performance through strong leadership, data-driven decision-making, and disciplined accountability. This role operates fully within the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) and is responsible for scorecard ownership, quarterly Rocks, and the financial integrity of the L10 leadership rhythm.

The CFO partners with the COO and CPO to align financial resources with program delivery, staffing capacity, and organizational growth.

Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy

• Leads all financial planning, forecasting, and budget development in partnership with the CEO and senior leadership team.
• Presents financial results, variances, and risk analysis to the Board of Directors and Business Management Committee.
• Translates financial data into clear, actionable insight for operational leaders who are not financial specialists.
• Drives long-term financial sustainability planning including endowment strategy, reserve management, and capital allocation.
• Leads treasury management, banking relationships, and cash flow optimization.

Operations & Internal Controls

• Oversees all accounting operations including month-end close, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll finance interface.
• Ensures compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, and all applicable government regulations.
• Leads the annual audit process in partnership with the external auditor.
• Maintains and strengthens internal controls across a multi-program, multi-site organization.
• Owns the financial systems infrastructure and identifies modernization opportunities that increase efficiency and accuracy.
• Operates fully within the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) as a Level 10 leadership team member.
• Owns quarterly Rocks for the Finance function aligned to organizational V/TO goals.
• Maintains Finance scorecard metrics with weekly visibility for the L10 team.
• Brings issues to the surface quickly and drives resolution through the IDS process.
• Models accountability discipline: every commitment has a deliverable, a deadline, and a name.

Team & Talent Development

• Recruits, develops, and retains a high-performing Finance team including the Controller and supporting staff.
• Establishes clear accountability expectations and performance standards for direct reports.
• Builds the layer below: the CFO’s success is measured in part by the strength of the team they develop, not solely by their own technical output.

Risk, Compliance & Regulatory

• Monitors and manages financial risk across government billing, reimbursement rate changes, labor cost exposure, and capital obligations.
• Ensures timely, accurate reporting to all government funders including DDS, SDRC, Medi-Cal, and HUD (PRAC contracts).
• Partners with legal counsel on matters touching financial risk, labor exposure, or regulatory compliance.
• Proactively identifies financial risks before they become board-level issues.

Cross-Functional Accountability

• Shares accountability with Executive Team for organizational financial performance.
• Partners with the COO on operational cost management, staffing cost trends, and budget execution.
• Partners with the CPO on program financial performance, billing rhythm, and service utilization.
• Participates in organization-wide decision-making and promotes consistent financial direction across departments.

Knowledge, Skills, and Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
• Minimum 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, with at least 5 years in a senior Finance role.
• Direct experience in nonprofit or mission-driven organization financial management.
• Experience operating within a multi-program, government-funded environment (Medi-Cal, DDS, HUD, or comparable).
• Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a Finance team through transition and growth.
• Strong board-level communication skills: ability to present complex financial data clearly and credibly to a non-technical audience.
• Experience with EOS or comparable operating systems, or demonstrated ability to adapt quickly to structured management frameworks.
• Experience in IDD, behavioral health, residential services, or comparable regulated care environments preferred.
• Familiarity with California DDS, SDRC, CCL Title 22, or Medi-Cal billing and compliance frameworks preferred.
• Experience with Ninety.io, UKG, or comparable nonprofit ERP and workforce management systems preferred.
• Full-time, in-person availability to work onsite in El Cajon, CA office required.
