Surgical Extern The Surgical Extern will have the opportunity to gain invaluable experience and exposure to the field of surgery while assisting our licensed Surgical Technologists and surgeons in their daily duties. This position is ideal for students currently enrolled in a surgical technology program who wish to supplement their education with hands‑on experience in a clinical setting. As a Surgical Extern, you will not be permitted to perform the full duties of a licensed Surgical Technologist, as required by law, but will receive valuable exposure and learning opportunities while assisting our surgical team. Responsibilities Shadow and observe licensed Surgical Technologists and surgeons to gain a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities. Assist in preparing operating rooms, ensuring they are clean, sterile, and well-stocked with the necessary equipment and supplies. Help with the transportation of patients to and from the operating room under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional. Observe and learn proper surgical aseptic techniques and infection control practices. Assist with the preparation and handling of surgical instruments and supplies under the direct supervision of a licensed Surgical Technologist. Provide basic patient care and comfort, such as answering questions, providing reassurance, and ensuring patient privacy. Participate in educational opportunities, such as attending workshops, seminars, or training sessions, as directed by the supervising Surgical Technologist or department manager. Promote consistent, positive patient interactions that advance patient service; demonstrate caring, empathy, and a patient‑ and family‑centered approach; communicate effectively with patients, physicians, and colleagues. Participate as an active member of the health‑care team and positively promote the rest of the team to patients/families/caregivers and other colleagues. Maintain a professional appearance and demonstrate behaviors consistent with established policies and procedures. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree. (MLS) Medical Laboratory Scientist or (MLT) Medical Laboratory Technician must be obtained within one year of employment start date. No travel required. No prior experience required.
