Special Education Therapist

Evaluate the needs of students referred for Special Education services in the areas of language, articulation, voice, or fluency. Provide diagnostic information, create reports, and work cooperatively with various instructional and professional evaluation personnel to recommend the most appropriate programs for students with disabilities.

Minimum Education/Certification:

• Master's degree in communication or Speech/Language Disorders required.
• The Speech and Language Pathologist (SLP) will be licensed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.

Special Knowledge/Skills/Experience:

• One year supervised clinical speech-language pathology experience.
• Working knowledge of federal laws, state guidelines and local district policies.
• Knowledge of diagnostic procedures, instructional and behavioral modifications, and adaptations.
• Thorough knowledge of communication disorders including receptive, expressive, and pragmatic language/social communication; phonological processes and articulation; voice and fluency.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

• Conduct independent evaluations to assess students with speech or language disorders and conditions.
• Demonstrate proficiency in selecting, administering, and interpreting evaluation instruments.
• Implement the evaluation process within specified timelines for initial referrals, special requests, and re-evaluations.
• Will be required to learn and utilize district evaluation report template.
• Collect and organize relevant evaluation data from students, teachers, parents, and outside evaluation reports when applicable.
• Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to enhance facilitation of educational programs and services.
• Make recommendations to general education staff and RTI/MTSS team regarding interventions and their effectiveness.
• Provide professional development to help school personnel identify and work more effectively with students with communication deficits.
• Maintain computer skills to access program needs.
• Make recommendations for student eligibility and student's educational need for the implementation of Special Education services according to federal and Texas Education Agency regulations.
• Maintain confidentiality of student/parent and school's information and records.
• Coordinate and participate in the Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) Committee to assist with interpretation of evaluation data and make recommendations for appropriate placement and development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP) for students according to district procedures.
• Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations.
• Maintain positive, professional relationships and communicate effectively with supervisors, administrators, teachers, staff, students, and parents.
• Ability to travel throughout the district as assigned.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

• Standard testing equipment; standard office equipment including computer and peripherals.
• Frequent sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting.
• Frequent walking, grasping/squeezing, wrist flexion/extension.
• Regular light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds), occasional heaving lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities; controlling behavior through physical restraint; assisting non-ambulatory students.
• Exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, and communicable diseases; may require districtwide travel.
• Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under pressure; work prolonged or irregular hours
