DOTP-Maintenance Mechanic

Job Summary Provide mechanical maintenance support to maintain equipment in an electrical generating power plant; may perform Lead Mechanic duties during absence of a Lead Mechanic. Essential Duties/Responsibilities Install, maintain, test, inspect, and repair equipment such as boilers, turbines, pumps, motors, valves, condensers, heat exchanger vessels, etc. Replace bearings, packing in pumps and valves, shaft seals, sleeves, seats, and other miscellaneous parts used in plant equipment. Troubleshoot stationary and rotating equipment. Make repairs as needed in accordance with best practices. Operate machine shop equipment such as drill presses, lathes and boring mills. Repair or replace defective parts. Adjust clearances and tolerances on equipment, working from a blueprint, pattern or design drawing, lays out. Use micrometers and other precision devices. Design and build special tools and apparatuses to facilitate work. Scrape and fit bearings on rotating equipment. Check equipment operation by observing oil pressures and levels, foreign sounds and similar observations. Gather routine vibration data and perform basic analysis. Perform gas and/or arc welding in mechanical repairs and fabrication. Additionally, Oxygen Acetylene cutting and brazing performs. Perform plumbing and pipe fitting tasks. Remove and install non-asbestos insulation materials on boilers, heaters, tanks, turbines, lines, valves, etc. Develop proficiency with SAP (Computerized Maintenance Management System) in all job related areas. Use blueprints, diagrams, sketches, instructions and specifications in daily duties. Set up rigging for installing and removing equipment. Identify and order proper materials for job completion. Document work performed for equipment histories. Effectively apply knowledge of environmental rules and regulations in all work situations. Review and/or develop equipment spare parts lists and PM procedures. Communicate effectively with all plant personnel. Provide direction and/or supervise outside resources in areas of responsibility, as necessary. Recognize safety hazards and follow applicable safety guidelines and procedures. Support skill enhancement by assisting and mentoring other personnel (including apprentices) on proper and safe use of tools and maintenance procedures. Employee must arrange own transportation to work location and may be reassigned to another location at the Company's discretion. Working Conditions Must be prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Ability to work in mentally stressful environments: must be able to react to crises where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations. Work with and around hazardous and non-hazardous materials (reference the waste management guidance manual). Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as required i.e., steel-toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses etc. Minimum Requirements High school diploma, GED or equivalent knowledge of English, mathematics and grammar. Minimum 3 years' experience in mechanical maintenance experience in the repair, inspection, and/or maintenance of related power plant or machine shop equipment including inspection and preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, fabricating and diagnostics OR 3 years mechanical maintenance experience in a similar industrial environment. The position is a DOT PHMSA covered position and requires the successful candidate to pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen and drug and alcohol testing background check, and once placed will be a participant in the NRG DOT Program. Preferred Qualifications Associates degree or equivalent apprenticeship. Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Sound level of basic mechanical aptitude skills. Ability to use hand tools (e.g., wrenches, screw drivers, sledgehammers, etc.). Ability to operate Company vehicles and equipment (e.g., forklift, mobile crane, etc.) and maintain operating licenses and certifications. TDL is required. Knowledge of rotating equipment and general industrial maintenance activities and procedures. Ability to follow, interpret and act on written and verbal job instructions, and reports, technical manuals and data. Ability to use basic math and geometry. Ability to calculate measurements and computations used to repair and maintain power plant equipment. Ability to use a personal computer and associated software. Ability to Tag Out/Lock Out equipment per NRG Tag Out/Lock Out procedure. Ability to diagnose and correct mechanical equipment troubles and repairs or recommend major repairs. Ability to perform preventative and corrective maintenance procedures on mechanical equipment. Ability to clean work area routinely. Ability to certify as a "code" welder with proper training. Assist Operations and other maintenance personnel (e.g., Electrical, I&C) in the performance of assigned duties. Coordinate contractor/vendor activities assigned. Perform other duties as may be assigned. Physical Requirements (Demand and Frequency) Power Plant Environment - Work both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with Heat Stress procedures. Around large rotating equipment energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, and/or in confined places, on elevations in excess of 250 feet, or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater. Climb stairways, ladders, and work from aerial devices. Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and working with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in position above and below head, and extended from body to complete repairs. Position requires climbing stairways, ladders, and works from scaffolding, platforms and aerial devices. Lift, carry, position and use tools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs.) in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledgehammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls or come-a-longs. Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment. Performance of duties may cause frequent jarring of the body. Have ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals. Ability to discern assorted colors.
