Position Summary and Qualifications

The Certified Respiratory Therapist is responsible for delivering respiratory care as prescribed by the attending physician and conducting diagnostic tests to assess the necessity for and effectiveness of therapy.

• Initiates, monitors, and maintains care for patients on mechanical ventilation.
• Assists in the placement of artificial airways.
• Conducts and documents patient assessments, including breath sounds, airway patency, and cuff pressure at least once per shift.
• Verifies and records ventilator function and patient status every four hours at a minimum.
• Assists in the transportation of patients who are dependent on ventilators.
• Provides support during deliveries for neonatal resuscitation and stabilization as needed.
• Administers and monitors respiratory treatments.
• Delivers therapy in accordance with established departmental policies.
• Evaluates patients within two hours of receiving respiratory therapy orders and initiates treatment as required.
• Educates patients and their families on proper respiratory therapy techniques.
• Ensures assigned areas are stocked appropriately at the end of each shift.
• Responds promptly to treatment needs in the Emergency Department.
• Acts immediately during emergency codes, managing airways and performing external compressions as necessary.
• Responds swiftly to all urgent patient situations, including Rapid Response, Stroke Alert, Stemi Alert, and Trauma Alert.
• Sets up new oxygen therapy per departmental guidelines without delay.
• Adheres to established infection control policies within the hospital and department.
• Records relevant information in the patient's medical records.
• Accurately documents all respiratory care interventions during the assigned shift.
• Documents education provided to patients and families.
• Keeps departmental records current.
• Enters charges for services rendered during each shift.
• Provides the incoming shift with an accurate and current patient report.
• Conducts non-invasive and invasive diagnostic tests and monitoring.
• Performs arterial blood gas sampling and analyses, communicating critical values immediately per departmental policy.
• Conducts pulmonary function tests as ordered and reports results within three hours.
• Executes bedside spirometry and accurately records the results.
• Measures and records peak flow, inspiratory and expiratory force, and vital capacity accurately.
• Monitors pulse oximetry, transcutaneous CO2, and end-tidal CO2 levels.
• Performs EKGs as ordered.
• Conducts cleaning, preventive maintenance, and calibration of respiratory care equipment as required.
• Assembles, verifies function, and cleans ventilators, documenting these actions before patient use.
• Maintains and calibrates pulmonary function testing equipment according to manufacturer specifications and departmental policies.
• Performs calibration and maintenance of arterial blood gas instrumentation per CAP requirements.
• Calibrates and troubleshoots transcutaneous monitors and oxygen analyzers.
• Functions as a respiratory care protocol assessor.
• Assesses patients based on physician-approved criteria within one hour of receiving orders and documents findings.
• Writes accurate therapy orders based on triage scores in the physician’s order sheet under “RCP.”
• Delivers initial therapies as prescribed.
• Reassesses patients within the established timeframe, adjusting therapy as needed and documenting changes.
• Communicates all RCP therapies—initial and modifications—to relevant staff members and documents accordingly in departmental records.

Required Qualifications:

• Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of starting employment.
• Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.
• (NBRC-CRT) Certification as a Respiratory Therapist.
• (RCP-State) Certification as a Respiratory Therapist/Practitioner.
• High School diploma or GED, or completion of a vocational program.
