Speech Pathologist

This position has an expected start date of March 1, 2027.
Location: Fort Wayne Hospital in Fort Wayne, IN.
Shift: Part Time with rotating weekend coverage; Positions will support inpatient only - intensive care units, progressive care units, and medical-surgical patients.
Requirements:
- Requires a Master's Degree from an accredited academic program in speech pathology; or, if foreign trained, graduation from a speech pathology education program outside the US with educationally equivalent coursework accepted by Indiana PLA.
- Requires current license in the State of Indiana.
- Requires a certificate of clinical competence awarded by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) or eligibility for this certificate.
- Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA.
- Advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Provides skilled speech-language pathology services to patients across the lifespan whose illness, injury, or condition impacts communication, cognitive-communication, voice, feeding, or swallowing function. Evaluates communication, cognitive-linguistic, voice, feeding, and swallowing performance and develops individualized plans of care that address factors affecting functional communication, safe swallowing, and participation in daily activities. Implements evidence-based interventions to improve communication, cognition, voice, feeding, swallowing, and overall functional independence. Collaborates with patients, caregivers, and the interdisciplinary care team to optimize outcomes, quality of life, and safe transitions of care. Supervises students and support personnel in accordance with state regulations and organizational policy. Participates in activities that support patient care, quality improvement, education, safety, and department operations while advancing IU Health's mission, vision, and values.

Clinical Practice - Performs speech-language pathology evaluations, assessments, treatment planning, treatment interventions, reassessments, and re-evaluations in accordance with the ASHA Scope of Practice in Speech-Language Pathology. Provides direct patient care to address functional limitations affecting communication, cognitive-communication, voice, feeding, swallowing, and overall participation in daily activities. Develops individualized plans of care with measurable goals, provides patient and caregiver education, collaborates with patients, caregivers, and the healthcare team, and identifies discharge planning needs. Completes accurate and timely documentation, coding, and charge capture in compliance with department, regulatory, and payer requirements. Initiates referrals when patient needs fall outside the scope of speech-language pathology practice.

Training/Patient Education - Provides education to patients and families based on individual needs and evaluates understanding and effectiveness. Supports the development of others through mentorship, precepting, and participation in educational and professional development activities.
Safety Awareness - Uses equipment appropriately and follows established safety practices to maintain a safe environment for patients, coworkers, and visitors.
Relationship Building and Customer Care - Builds positive relationships with patients, caregivers, colleagues, and community partners. Demonstrates excellent customer service through respect, responsiveness, and a commitment to meeting customer needs. Represents IU Health and Rehabilitation Services in a professional manner.
Oral/Written Communication - Communicates clearly, professionally, and effectively in verbal and written formats. Actively listens, shares information appropriately, and follows instructions to support quality patient care and team collaboration.
Collaboration - Works collaboratively with team members and leaders to achieve patient care and organizational goals. Shares knowledge, supports best practices, and utilizes resources efficiently to promote effective and high-quality services.
