Entry-Level Patent Prosecution Technical Advisor (Chemistry)

Overview Mintz’s patent practice offers comprehensive strategic counseling in patent law and practice that enables clients to clarify goals, find solutions, and achieve results throughout the innovation lifecycle. The firm advises clients on obtaining and enforcing patent protection, licensing or acquiring patent rights, executing financing and other business transactions, and navigating the patent landscape in various industries. We are seeking an entry-level technical advisor with an advanced degree in chemistry or relevant laboratory experience to join the IP Prosecution team in our San Francisco office. Responsibilities Work under the supervision and guidance of partners in the Intellectual Property Section to perform patent-related activities, primarily in patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate analysis, and due diligence. Assess scientific literature, patents, and patent application documents covering a variety of chemical subjects, including organic, synthetic, and medicinal chemistry. Understand, critique, and provide insightful opinions on scientific data relating to inventions. Conduct comprehensive searches for scientific articles, patents, and patent application documents relevant to the subject of an invention. Perform in-depth analysis comparing an invention with existing discoveries or inventions. Identify essential elements, features, or components of an invention. Compose patent applications, including a comprehensive background of the field, a description of critical features and components, and a set of claims clearly and distinctly defining the invention. Draft responses to rejections of a patent application from the United States Patent and Trademark Office and other worldwide Patent Offices, providing detailed analysis of cited references, assessing differences between the invention and the citations, and presenting convincing arguments for allowance. Collaborate with colleagues on various projects. Adapt effectively in different team environments. Present ideas, reasoning, and conclusions in a concise way to colleagues. Provide insightful feedback and arguments to colleagues on their ideas. Work with clients on innovative and cutting‑edge technologies to procure patent protection and build IP portfolios. Collaborate with team members, which is an important component of any role at Mintz. Work from the office approximately 60% of the time in accordance with the firm’s published guidelines. Qualifications Ph.D. in Chemistry (or candidates who have defended their dissertation and are awaiting degree conferral) or relevant laboratory experience. Demonstrated knowledge in organic chemistry, synthetic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, and pharmaceutical sciences. Demonstrated verbal presentation skills conveying scientific concepts, terms, and discoveries to wide audiences, including scientists and non‑scientists. Demonstrated scientific writing ability, including analyzing and explaining abstract scientific concepts, synthesizing large amounts of literature into concise descriptions of the state of the art, and differentiating and describing important differences among related discoveries or breakthroughs. Ability to prioritize competing responsibilities, stay organized, and exercise attention to detail. Ability to collaborate and work effectively in team settings. Service‑oriented mindset.
