POSITION DESCRIPTION
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
CLINICAL FACULTY APPOINTMENT
Department of Lymphoma/Myeloma SUMMARY The selected faculty member will report to the Chairman of the Department of Lymphoma/Myeloma, and hold a rank of Assistant Professor, based on prior level of experience and academic accomplishments. The selected faculty will provide clinical care to patients, manage care teams for both inpatient and outpatient settings, and provide a teaching environment for fellows, residents, and students in the specialties of Lymphoma. He/she will independently design, execute, and conduct a broad range of Lymphoma research projects in his/her respective field with a focus on translational and clinical studies. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES C: 72%, A: 3%, R: 20%, E: 5% = 100% I. Administration (3%) Serves on institutional and hospital committees and attends appropriate meetings, which may include travel to each meeting site. Listens to deliberations and provide verbal feedback as necessary. Visually reviews all documents pertaining to committee functions. Additional opportunities may available to coordinate the lymphoma clinical research infrastructure, and organize local and national meetings sponsored through UT MD Anderson. II. Education/Teaching (5%) Attends, participates, and leads Department teachings and continuing education conferences. Keeps current with educational requirements and standards by level of trainee as it pertains to institutional, state, medical board and crediting body. III. Patient Care (72%) Practices clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, and the American College of Physicians, properly balanced with other academic activities. 1. Must be capable of providing complete and thorough history and physical patient examinations. Must be able to perform invasive procedures as dictated by the physician's subspecialty. This may require standing, bending, stooping, lifting, hearing manual dexterity, and clear and concise verbal communications. 2. Develops and maintains a clinical practice for patients referred to UT MD Anderson Cancer Center. a. Provides physician staffing for the Lymphoma/Myeloma Center and consult service at a level commensurate with that which would be provided by other medical oncologists with the same level of training and experience. b. Manages of patient-care provider teams. c. Completes patient documentation for medical records within timeframes required by institutional policy; will require dictating in a clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents. d. Visually reviews for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents in accordance with Institutional policy. e. Corresponds as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with physicians regarding patient care and treatment. f. Keeps abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty. This will require listening to and assimilating information from conferences. g. Requests appropriate consultations for patients by phone conversations or in writing to other physicians. 3. Acts as a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, students, and staff. 4. Provides peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the Department. 5. Able to work within a context of very intense interpersonal relationships including other physicians, patients and staff. IV. Research (20%)1. Actively engages in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the department. a. Develops programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping with the goals of the Department. Requires that the person have the ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to the area of research. May necessitate (orally or in writing) instructing research support personnel in protocol implementation. b. Seeks appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical research. May require completion of grant applications and will also require budget development and analysis. c. Presents relative research findings through timely publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific meetings. d. Possesses consistent record of successful, independent, and peer-reviewed research funding. e. Earns national and international recognition for research expertise. Expected to produce a cohesive body of scholarly work demonstrating progress in an important area of oncology research. f. Demonstrates outstanding innovation in research, leading to consistent production of peer-reviewed publications. V. Service (0%) Includes internal activities within MD Anderson and external services activities. External services may be performed either within or in addition to your assigned allocation of effort. 1. Doctorate-level degree in a field appropriate to faculty role and department mission. 2. Licensed to practice in Texas. Board certified (or obtained within departmental timeline), unless exempted. 3. At least 2 years experience as Instructor or 5 years post degree with any combination of time as a clinician, clinical scientist or GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residencies or fellowships)4. Appropriate post medical doctoral training per discipline.
