Fleet Operations Manager Albemarle County Public Schools Transportation - Charlottesville, Virginia Open in Google Maps Job Details Job ID: 5892245 Application Deadline: Posted until filled Posted: Aug 18, 2026 4:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: Immediately Job Description Fleet Operations Manager Albemarle County Public Schools Department of Transportation Full-Time, 12 months Exempt, Pay Grade 16 VRS-Eligible, Benefits-Eligible The Fleet Operations Manager General Definition of Work: Responsible for leadership, management, and supervision of bus shop employees, including floor supervisors, mechanics, automotive service assistants, parts and service coordinator and parts and service clerks. Resolves employee performance issues and manages all aspects of the maintenance, repair, and servicing of the school division and the local government motor vehicle fleets. Serves as a member of the Transportation Key Leaders Team, assists in developing goals, policies, and procedures for the Department. Responds to school bus accidents and is on call 24 hours, 7 days a week if needed to address emergencies. Essential Functions: Provides direct support to the Deputy Director for Transportation. Advises the Director and Deputy Director on the management of all maintenance operations; to include potential problems which might affect fleet readiness; Oversees the processing of payroll information for fleet maintenance personnel; Prepares billing for the bus shop; Supervises the maintenance of outside agencies; Supervises the maintenance of school buses and other County government vehicles including police, engineer, and maintenance vehicles; Plans, organizes and schedules the maintenance, repair and servicing of motor vehicles and equipment; Manages the county-wide preventive maintenance program; Responsible for hiring fleet maintenance personnel; Participates on interview panels for and recommends candidates for employment or promotion as requested; Develops and prepares specifications for vehicle and equipment acquisitions; Evaluates all proposed vehicle purchases in terms of safety, cost efficiency and operational requirements; executes purchases; Performs detailed fleet analysis using a variety of data and criteria, prepares a wide variety of periodic and special reports concerning school bus maintenance costs; develops and executes the fleet maintenance budget; Maintains records, files, reports and correspondence concerning maintenance activity, labor utilization, equipment conditions, administers the fleet information management system; Develops and recommends policies and procedures for the maintenance of the fleet; modifying school division vehicle repair and maintenance procedures consistent with state and local laws; Works with driver trainer to conduct pre-service and in-service training for bus drivers and transportation assistants and maintains School Bus Trainer certification; Provides for state-of-the-art training for fleet maintenance personnel; Negotiates and implement service contracts in support of fleet management; Performs duties as primary contact for: maintenance and repair of automated fleet maintenance and fueling systems; school bus facility maintenance and repairs; and all associated infrastructure throughout the Division supporting pupil transportation (bus parking lots at schools, etc.); Responds to bus accidents and is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if required to address emergencies; conducts accident investigation involving school division vehicles and serves on the Safety Review Committee; Assists in evaluating road conditions and makes recommendations regarding school closings due to weather and other types of emergencies; Serves as Acting Deputy Director for Transportation Operations or Transportation Operations Manager as required when either are absent; Performs related duties as needed. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough and comprehensive knowledge of: the principles and practices of fleet vehicle and equipment repair shop management; the characteristics and maintenance needs of a wide variety of automotive and mechanical equipment; the hazards and safety precautions of large scale shop operations; the principles of operations of gasoline and diesel engines, power trains, hydraulic and air brake systems, diagnostic skills in fault analysis; computer skills in data entry and evaluation of maintenance histories of vehicles and equipment. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with the public and subordinates; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public and subordinates. Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of others. Knowledge of pupil transportation regulations desired. English language proficiency is required per Code of Virginia 46.2-341.14. Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or vocational school, and a minimum of three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive fleets is required. Two years of supervisory and administrative experience is required. Graduation from an accredited two or four year college or university with an Associates or Bachelor Degree preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Satisfactory health condition is a requirement as certified by competent medical authority. Must demonstrate the ability to successfully complete the Virginia Education Department training curriculum for school bus drivers and obtain a Commercial Driver's License with appropriate school bus endorsements within the probationary period. Possession of or ability to obtain Virginia State Inspections License within six months. Familiarity with commonly used automated office equipment is required. Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts: Work typically performed between an office setting and an open bay bus maintenance facility. Frequent bending, stooping, and crawling to inspect on and under vehicles is necessary. Occasional travel throughout all County roads during days and evenings in inclement weather is required. Frequent contact with the Director/Deputy Director and bus shop employees is necessary. Regular contact with local government officials to coordinate a maintenance plan is necessary. Frequent personal contact with vendors and general public is required.
