District-Wide School Nurse

Birmingham Public Schools is seeking a district wide School Nurse. This is a 12-month, full-time position that is grant funded. The District-Wide School Nurse promotes student health, safety, and academic success by managing health services across the district. This role involves developing individual healthcare plans, delivering direct nursing care, supporting state health compliance, and serving as a liaison between families, medical providers, and school staff. This grant-funded position is essential in the promotion of our district's strategic plan concerning creating and maintaining a culture of unity and well-being among our staff, students and throughout our community.

This position is supported through Michigan Section 31aa(5) funding for student mental health support staff. Consistent with grant requirements, individuals hired into this position must:

• Hold all licenses, certifications, and/or approvals required for the services provided and not practice outside the scope of their professional credentials.
• Agree to participate in and comply with any comprehensive evaluation or program evaluation requirements associated with Section 31aa(5) funding.
• Complete all required district, state, grant, service-tracking, and outcome documentation.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide skilled nursing care, emergency triage, and first aid for students and staff.
• Manage administration of medications and clinical procedures (e.g., blood glucose monitoring, gastrostomy tube feedings, catheterization) in accordance with physician orders and district policy.
• Formulate and implement Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and Section 504 health accommodations.
• Complete Medicaid documentation for eligible services, as applicable.
• Collect and maintain program implementation and student service data as required by Birmingham Public Schools and applicable state or grant requirements.
• Maintain accurate, confidential student health records in compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).
• Oversee district compliance for state-mandated immunization tracking, communicable disease reporting (via local Michigan County Health Departments), and vision/hearing screenings.
• Train, delegate, and supervise non-licensed school personnel in health-related tasks (e.g., medication administration, EpiPen usage) per Michigan Public Health Code guidelines.
• Serve as a key member of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), IEP teams, and 504 committees to address student medical needs affecting learning.
• Collaborate with local Michigan health agencies, pediatric care providers, and community resources to support student well-being.
• Provide health education and wellness guidance to staff, students, and families.

Qualifications & Certification

• Licensure: Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA).
• Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited college or university preferred.
• Certifications: Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification (BLS for Healthcare Providers) required; Certified School Nurse (CSN) or eligibility for MDE School Nurse certification strongly preferred.
• Experience: Minimum of 23 years of clinical nursing experience; prior experience in pediatric, community health, or school nursing preferred.
• Key Skills: Strong knowledge of child development, chronic condition management (e.g., diabetes, asthma, anaphylaxis), de-escalation, and student information systems (e.g., PowerSchool).

Working Conditions

• Requires mobility across multiple school buildings within the district.
• Physical ability to lift or assist students, administer CPR, and respond quickly to emergency situations.
