Police Dispatcher Trainee

Job Information This position is scheduled to receive a 5% salary adjustment in July 2026. Newly‑hired employees may receive up to $5,000 relocation allowance for moving to San Diego County. The position is also eligible for the Employee Referral Program; eligible employees that make a successful referral will receive either 16 hours of leave or a referral payment of up to $3,000. Position Summary To receive, evaluate, and transmit emergency and routine voice radio messages via telephone, teletype, and automatic alarm; to dispatch required equipment and personnel in accordance with standard policies and procedures; to maintain records; and to perform related work as required. This is the entry‑level class in the Police Dispatcher series. Employees at this level are supervised while learning job tasks and may have limited or no directly related work experience. Work experience as a public safety dispatcher is highly desirable. Essential Functions Functions may include, but are not limited to: receiving service requests by telephone on 911 emergency and business lines; obtaining information on the nature, location, and caller details; remaining on the line with victims during emergencies as appropriate; creating records of request information; analyzing requests for police service; determining priority ranking; inviting the appropriate level of service; determining available units and dispatching personnel and equipment according to standard operational procedures; referring difficult or extremely serious calls to a supervisor; listening to each radio transmission from police personnel in the field, acknowledging, and complying with requests for action; keeping superiors informed of emergency situations and general activities; placing telephone calls to other police jurisdictions, city departments, emergency crews, tow companies, ambulance services, coroner, relatives of victims, telephone and utility companies, alarm companies, traffic signal maintenance, and other services concerning an emergency; maintaining detailed Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) records; operating CAD equipment, TDD, and other office equipment; operating teletype and computer terminal to check for registered owners of vehicles; referring to maps and reference materials to secure information needed by personnel; taking reports and relaying messages by radio, telephone, or CAD; typing, issuing case numbers, logging departmental activities and performing routine clerical work; assisting in monitoring jail cells via a closed‑circuit TV system; maintaining law‑enforcement resource status and activity log in the CAD computer; instructing other personnel on communications equipment; performing minor or routine upkeep and maintenance of equipment; and other duties related to the position. #J-18808-Ljbffr
