Under general supervision of the Coordinator and Director of Duplin County Transportation Department, the purpose of the position is to transport passengers or food from place to place within the County and to medical facilities in surrounding counties. Employees in the classification perform manual work. Position is responsible for receiving request for transportation to specified destinations; transporting individuals; receiving money; maintaining cleanliness; fuel levels, maintaining records of all trip information. Performs related work as required. Essential Functions Obtains keys to assigned vehicle and prepares for daily route; performs pre-trip and post-trip inspection of vehicle. Reports/logs defects and maintenance needs. Operates transit vehicle on an assigned route and schedule. Observes all traffic laws. Assists passengers entering and exiting the vehicle, when necessitated. Operates lift as needed by passengers for entry and exit. Maintains contact with dispatcher and is available at all times during assigned shift. Reports unusual traffic conditions or passenger emergencies. Operates on board computer system (tablet) to receive and process route information, access mapping information, view pertinent client information, and key monetary/fare collection amounts from customers. Transports clients safely to and from programs, appointments, and outings as requested, providing on going supervision, and positive interaction. Confirms clients boarding are scheduled on manifest. Collects fares and ensures collections balance. Ensures all passengers use appropriate seat restraints before beginning transport. Operates transit lift safely and secures wheel chair clients using the appropriate restraints. Negates inappropriate behaviors and misconduct during transportation to ensure safe transportation and reports any issues or concerns immediately to management. Ensure that policies and procedures are followed and that all reports/records are completed accurately and submitted on time. Responsible for the cleanliness and overall condition of the Transportation Vans. All employees may be requested to perform other duties as assigned. All employees may be required to assist county operations during a State of Emergency, disaster or other county event. Qualifications Education: High School Diploma or GEDExperience: Must be at least 21 years of age with at least three years licensed motor vehicle operation experience with a good driving record for the preceding three years.Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing motor vehicles; general knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing motor vehicle operations; general knowledge of the geography of Duplin County, surrounding areas, and the locations of streets and important buildings; ability to use a tablet; ability to deal tactfully with transit clients; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain and effective working relationship with associates and the general public.
