This role focuses on troubleshooting, installing, programming, and maintaining industrial electrical and automation systems used in cargo handling and marine terminal operations. You will work at a component level on industrial electronic controls, including VFDs, DC drives, PLCs, HMIs, industrial networks, and associated wiring for conveyors, barges, cranes, heavy equipment, and terminal infrastructure. The position supports operations by ensuring reliable performance of electrical, automation, and process control equipment, helping to improve efficiency and reduce total operating costs.

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot industrial electronic controls at the component level, including VFDs, DC drives, PLCs, HMIs, industrial networks, and associated wiring for conveyors, barges, e-cranes, heavy equipment, and terminal equipment.

• Support operations through the installation, programming, start-up, and maintenance of electrical, automation, and process control equipment used in loading, unloading, transfer, and storage of cargo.

• Install, calibrate, perform light programming, and conduct preventive maintenance on electrical and automation equipment to improve reliability and reduce total operating costs.

• Diagnose and repair equipment and instrumentation associated with conveying equipment, motors, GE drives, PLCs, VFDs, power supplies, ship loaders, and various support equipment.

• Perform electrical preventive maintenance and repairs on overhead cranes, gantry cranes, bridge cranes, storm water drain pumps, sewage pumps, generators, building lighting, and all terminal equipment.

• Carry out terminations and troubleshooting on PLCs and associated control wiring, applying strong PLC troubleshooting skills and basic programming understanding.

• Assist with high voltage outages and related preventive maintenance activities, ensuring safe and efficient restoration of power and equipment functionality.

• Support mechanical repairs when needed, particularly on medium to large drive couplings, brakes, and reduction gearboxes, in coordination with mechanics and millwrights.

• Contribute to modernization projects for new equipment and systems at terminal sites, including control panels, instrumentation, and control systems.

• Work from blueprints, wiring schematics, manuals, and verbal instructions from management or third-party sources to install, modify, and repair electrical and control systems.

• Install, assemble, and maintain industrial control panels and instrumentation, ensuring proper wiring, labeling, and functionality.

• Support site networking equipment related to wireless radios and industrial networks, as needed for control and monitoring systems.

• Work safely with electrical systems ranging from 120V to 4160V motor controls, including medium voltage motors and starters.

• Maintain flexibility in scheduling, including willingness to work extra hours or a flexible schedule, and travel to sites in the greater New Orleans area as required.

• Attain and maintain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) and comply with all applicable safety and security procedures.

Essential Skills

• High-level industrial electrician knowledge and experience in troubleshooting industrial electronic controls at the component level.

• Strong working knowledge of Ohm’s Law and its practical application in troubleshooting and maintenance.

• Extensive PLC troubleshooting experience, including terminations, diagnostics, and fault resolution.

• Ability to install, maintain, diagnose, and repair industrial equipment and instrumentation related to cargo conveying systems, motors, drives, PLCs, VFDs, and associated wiring.

• Proficiency in reading and working from blueprints, wiring schematics, technical manuals, and verbal instructions.

• Experience with electrical maintenance and repair on cranes, pumps, generators, building lighting, and terminal equipment.

• Ability to perform electrical preventive maintenance, including inspections, testing, and component replacement on high voltage and medium voltage systems.

• Capability to support control system installation and programming, including industrial control panel assembly and instrumentation.

• Diverse electrical knowledge sufficient to support Emerson PLCs, Control Techniques VFDs and DC drives, bulk cargo belt scales, wireless radios, site networking equipment, and 120V–4160V motor controls.

• Ability to attain and maintain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC).

• Willingness and ability to work extra hours or a flexible schedule, including travel to multiple terminal sites as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with Emerson (formerly GE) RX3i controllers and Machine Edition software is preferred.

• Background in industrial technology or electrical engineering is highly beneficial.

• Journeyman or master electrician license, PLC commissioning experience, and industrial control system experience are strong assets.

• Experience with medium voltage motors and starters is preferred, with familiarity in daily work on medium to high voltage systems.

• Basic mechanical industry knowledge, including medium to large drive couplings, brakes, and reduction gearboxes, is a significant plus.

• Experience with instrumentation, industrial control systems, and control panel assembly is advantageous.

• Exposure to modernization projects involving upgrades to electrical and automation equipment is beneficial.

• Comfort working with industrial networks, wireless radios, and related site networking equipment.

• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

• Effective communication skills for collaborating with operations, maintenance, and external partners.

Work Environment

The work takes place in an active marine terminal and industrial setting, supporting cranes, conveyors, pumps, generators, and heavy equipment involved in cargo handling operations. You will primarily work day shifts but must remain open to schedule flexibility and extra hours as needed, with occasional travel to sites in the greater New Orleans area. The role involves working in dusty environments and in all types of temperature and weather conditions, including heat, cold, wind, and humidity. You must be able to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb up and down ladders and stairs, and negotiate uneven and moving surfaces throughout the terminal. The position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work at protected heights up to 130 feet. Visual requirements include close, distance, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus for detailed electrical and mechanical work. You will work around medium to high voltage electrical systems, industrial control panels, PLCs, drives, and networking equipment, following strict safety procedures and fit-for-duty requirements, including pre-employment physical and drug testing.

Job Type & Location

This is a Permanent position based out of Belle Chasse, LA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $115000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
