Motor Vehicle Operator

Summary The Motor Vehicle Operator serves within the Transportation Office and is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and courteous transportation services for Veterans, employees, medical personnel, supplies, laboratory specimens, medications, and equipment. Responsibilities The incumbentoperates a variety of government vehicles, including passenger buses and ambulatory transport vehicles, while ensuring compliance with all applicable traffic laws, safety regulations, and Department of Veterans Affairs policies. Duties include but are not limited to: Operates a variety of government-owned vehicles, including passenger buses and ambulatory transport vehicles, to transport Veterans, employees, medical personnel, supplies, laboratory specimens, medications, and equipment to designated locations. Provides scheduled and non-scheduled transportation services between VA facilities, Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), and other approved destinations. Assists passengers, including individuals with disabilities, with boarding, exiting, and securing personal belongings and medical equipment during transport. Utilizes wheelchair lifts, tie-downs, straps, and other safety devices to ensure passenger safety and comfort during transportation. Conducts pre-trip, post-trip, and daily vehicle inspections to ensure vehicles are safe, clean, and operational. Monitors vehicle maintenance needs and reports mechanical deficiencies, safety concerns, accidents, or operational issues to appropriate personnel. Maintains accurate transportation records, trip logs, mileage reports, passenger manifests, maintenance documentation, and other required reports. Verifies passenger eligibility and authorization for transportation services and ensures required documentation is completed and maintained. Safely operates vehicles in varying weather, traffic, and road conditions while adhering to federal, state, local, and VA transportation regulations. Performs basic vehicle maintenance tasks, including checking fluid levels, replacing minor components such as lights and wipers, and ensuring safety equipment is operational. Coordinates transportation schedules and delivery requirements with supervisors, dispatch personnel, Patient Travel staff, and other stakeholders. Provides exceptional customer service by communicating professionally and courteously with Veterans, caregivers, visitors, and staff while supporting the VA mission. Maintains confidentiality and safeguards sensitive information in accordance with privacy and information security requirements. Performs other related duties as assigned. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Exert moderate physical effort in operating, turning, backing and controlling vehicles which carry heavy loads and up to 46 passengers. Effort is required to assist passengers from entering and exiting government vehicles. The incumbent will be required to lift, push or pull moderate to heavy items daily, such as wheelchair patients, machinery, mail bins, Dental Bins and other Medical Center supply goods. The position requires sitting for prolonged periods of time, regular stooping and bending and the arms and feet to operate the vehicle. Operates vehicles in all types of weather and traffic conditions on public roads and highways. Outside work may involve extreme cold or hot working conditions as well as rain, snow and Ice. Protective clothing is provided as protection from the outside elements. There is the possibility of both minor personal accidents, such as cuts or bruises while loading and unloading the vehicle as well as injuries as a result of a more serious vehicle accident. The incumbent is exposed to periods of driving in heavy traffic. Education Additional Information Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
