Program Coordinator and Teacher

First State Squash is a not-for-profit youth development organization based in Wilmington, DE. First State Squash seeks to support Wilmington youth to achieve and sustain personal academic success, physical wellness and matriculation and graduation from post-secondary institutions. First State Squash’s year-round program offers longitudinal, tuition-free academic programming, squash instruction and cultural and community service opportunities for over 100 students annually, currently in fifth through twelfth grades. The Opportunity: The Program Coordinator and Teacher will support the successful management and implementation of First State Squash’s outstanding academic enrichment program. This role will collaborate with FSS’s Academic Director and add to the strength of our daily teaching team while assuming responsibility for additional program initiatives. The successful candidate will challenge, nurture, and hold accountable FSS youth and bring a passion for working with young people within and beyond the classroom students. Primary Responsibilities: Program Delivery: Design and implement an engaging Middle School program with full Middle School enrollment and high attendance at practices, special events and external opportunities. Creation, facilitation and oversight of overall academic program goals and strategy: enrichment, homework help, and individual tutoring Create and uphold a structured, clear, and consistent classroom environment and a culture that nurtures rigorous academic growth. Successful tracking and management of student data for classrooms - report cards, FSS squash bucks incentive program. Lead individual student and family meetings as appropriate with regards to positive classroom efforts, challenging behaviors, or academic struggles. Initiate and maintain professional relationships with partner school teachers. High School Placement: Coordinate and support all aspects of the high school application process for FSS’s 8th grade cohort, including organizing school visits, communicating with families, providing essay writing and financial aid guidance, preparing students for interviews, and liaising with admissions offices. Summer Enrichment Camp and Summer Placement: Lead a minimum of two literacy-based summer enrichment courses for middle school. Facilitate FSS’s summer placement efforts for middle school students that apply to summer enrichment camps. Shared Program Staff Responsibilities include: Provide after-school transportation twice weekly in our 12/15-passenger van (training provided) for students to the facility, and for other special events and weekend trips. Collaborate with FSS Squash Director to lead successful recruitment of incoming class that meets articulated recruitment targets and ensures program capacity. Chaperone approximately six weekend field trips (community service projects, matches, tournaments, college campus visits) annually. One-to-one comp days are provided for overnight/8-hour events that take place on weekends. Assist with occasional project work to support and raise visibility of the organization; attend and help plan important First State Squash events and functions. Work on special projects as determined by organization-wide strategic imperatives. School year (Sept. – mid-June): During the academic year (September- June), the work day typically begins at 10:30 am and ends around 6:30pm, Monday through Friday. Summer (Mid-June – Aug.): The summer work day begins at approximately 9am and ends at 5pm. Qualifications: Education and Experience Previous teaching/classroom experience is a plus Skills Commitment to empowering historically marginalized populations and first generation college going students. Passion for educational opportunity. Interest in building deep staff and student relationships at First State Squash. High level of energy, curiosity, creativity and willingness to grow. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills. Results-oriented approach with impeccable attention to detail. Ability to strategize and think “big picture” and deliver on the details. Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (candidates must be comfortable driving students in a 10/12-passenger van). Compensation, Benefits and Vacation: Salary: Annual salary commensurate with experience. Benefits: A generous benefits plan includes health & dental coverage and a 3% Simple IRA match. Vacation: The position includes 5 weeks of paid vacation annually (with some restrictions) and 5 personal days. Some but not all national holidays are off.
