Clinical Documentation Integrity Manager

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Clinical Documentation Integrity Manager based in United States.

This is a remote leadership opportunity focused on strengthening Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) programs across acute care healthcare environments.
You will help oversee CDI operations, improve documentation quality, and ensure teams consistently achieve contractual and industry best-practice metrics.
The role combines clinical expertise, people leadership, project management, analytics, education, and client relationship management.
You will collaborate closely with physicians, HIM, coding, case management, quality teams, facility leadership, and CDI professionals.
Your work will directly support accurate clinical documentation, appropriate severity and acuity capture, compliant coding, and stronger organizational performance.
The position requires confidence navigating complex clinical and operational discussions, including conversations with physicians and senior healthcare leaders.
You will also contribute to technology optimization, client reporting, continuous improvement initiatives, and the implementation of new CDI engagements.

Accountabilities:

• Support the CDI Director with new client implementations, ongoing engagements, program oversight, and achievement of contractual and best-practice CDI performance metrics.
• Oversee daily CDI program activities, including productivity, quality, education, training, auditing, reporting, performance improvement, and standardized processes.
• Monitor key performance indicators, identify trends and performance gaps, and develop or support initiatives to improve clinical documentation outcomes.
• Ensure CDI teams have the tools, technology, resources, and guidance needed to perform concurrent record reviews, initiate and follow up on queries, and conduct query compliance reviews effectively.
• Promote best-practice CDI processes that connect accurate bedside clinical documentation with appropriate coding, reporting, acuity capture, physician profiling, and severity-of-illness representation.
• Assist with the development and maintenance of CDI policies, procedures, education materials, standardized practices, and operational workflows.
• Support month-end client reporting and analysis, using reporting technologies to evaluate performance, identify risks, and communicate actionable insights.
• Optimize the use of CDI technology, including data entry, reporting, tracking, analytics, and other capabilities that improve operational efficiency.
• Build strong working relationships with facility leadership, including HIM, coding, case management, quality, medical staff, and other clinical stakeholders.
• Develop a thorough understanding of each client’s organizational structure, clinical workflows, physician relationships, documentation practices, and coding environment.
• Ensure CDI practices remain aligned with applicable coding guidelines, query standards, regulatory requirements, DRG methodologies, and relevant clinical quality expectations.
• Provide or coordinate education and in-service training for CDI staff and physicians, including support for query compliance and quality reviews.
• Approve CDI team timesheets, participate in performance evaluations, develop performance improvement plans when necessary, and monitor required learning and compliance activities.
• Lead meetings and facilitate discussions with CDI teams, clients, physicians, facility leadership, and internal stakeholders, providing clear updates on progress, risks, issues, and opportunities.
• Identify project obstacles and operational risks, develop potential solutions, and escalate matters appropriately while actively supporting mitigation efforts.
• Serve as a trusted CDI resource for clients and internal teams, supporting business objectives and contributing to proposals and other business development activities when needed.
• Participate in recruiting activities and mentor CDI professionals by promoting teamwork, transparency, accountability, and continuous professional development.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Current professional credential as an RN, MD, or equivalent physician qualification , which must be maintained throughout employment.
• 7+ years of acute care hospital Clinical Documentation Integrity experience.
• 3+ years of prior management or team leadership experience.
• Strong clinical understanding of disease processes, medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and microbiology.
• Familiarity with encoder systems and DRG assignment, including MS-DRG and APR-DRG methodologies.
• Current working knowledge of Coding Clinic guidelines and federal updates affecting DRG systems and related coding practices.
• Comprehensive understanding of CDI processes, coding best practices, documentation requirements, and revenue cycle considerations.
• Strong analytical, project management, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate tactfully and confidently in complex or sensitive situations.
• Ability to engage effectively with physicians, including navigating challenging documentation discussions and influencing clinical stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to present information clearly to physicians, facility leadership, and senior-level audiences.
• Strong facilitation and active listening skills, with the ability to build trust across multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to manage competing priorities, identify risks, and work collaboratively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
• CCDS or CDIP certification preferred.
• RHIA, RHIT, or CCS certification preferred.
