The Librarian primarily assists the Library Director and in turn the customers with questions related to materials and services. This position also performs a variety of duties related to the circulation of materials, special programing and assisting customers. The Librarian provides research assistance in person at service desk, by phone and electronically to customers. The Librarian is responsible for the creation and evaluation of programming, training and services to internal and external customers. This position requires attention to detail, good organization skills, extensive knowledge of library reference, circulation, practices and procedures and the ability to work positively with the general public.

Works under the specific supervision of the Library Director. Basic supervision of the Library clerks on a day-to-day basis, acts as the first-line supervisor of the Library Clerks when the Library Director is absent.

Job Responsibilities

• Performs general duties related to the circulation of library materials; attends circulation and/ service desks; greets customers and assists with requests; initiates exchange of information required in the registration of accounts and the lending of library materials; checks in and checks out library materials; answers customer questions about services, programs, and collections; this position is specifically responsible for filling in the absence of a staff member (may need to fill in for a shift at short notice)
  • Segregates books and other materials needing repairs; mends books and materials as needed; applies dust jacket covers
  • General upkeep of library to maintain orderliness, cleanliness, safety
  • Assists customers in locating books and materials
  • Shelves, carts, and shelf-reads to ensure the order of materials
• Employee is expected to have a good understanding of the work unit and its services to respond to inquiries
  • Independently able to complete inventory, follow up on item search requests, follow the overdue procedures, and running reports in the koha
  • Documenting and/or opening cases general issues with customers, facilities and/or equipment as necessary
  • Following up on questions requiring more research assistance as necessary
• Cataloging and classifying library materials, including analysis of current collection and general maintenance of current collection
• Independently handling a variety of inquiries by telephone, email, and in person; and maintaining variety of records and files
  • Independently able to complete inventory, follow up on incident reports, create reports in the koha
  • Follows up regarding issues with customers, facilities and/or equipment with vendors or other departments as necessary
  • Handles research requests for in depth questions from internal and external customers requiring more technology, services, programming, etc.
  • Covering service points for customer inquiries during assigned shifts
• Ability to identify technology needs and make recommendations
  • Performs library related computer work such as entering and retrieving data
  • Assists customers with a variety of technologies, including but not limited to; apps, websites, computers, chromebooks, and Wi-Fi
  • Updating and maintaining public computers, devices, and other equipment
  • Assist maintenance of the library RFID security system, AMH, self-check units
  • Able to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting for library software and equipment
• Assists clerical staff including, but not limited to, the following:
  • Answer questions about assigned tasks
  • Evaluate the accuracy of work
  • Oversee assigned staff during their designated shifts
• Coordinates service operations with other library services and functions, develops programs and services to meet specific needs
  • Prepares, evaluates and create with the delivery of special programs and services (children, adult, and young adult)
  • Conducts tours for children, classes and civic groups
  • Prepares and presents library programs and supervises program presentation by volunteers.
• Attend professional meetings and training courses as required
• Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Education, Business Administration or similar field from an accredited college or university
• Five (5) years' experience in Libraries, with an emphasis Customer Service

Certifications:

• A valid Utah Driver's License.
• Completion of Utah State UPLIFT Certification or at least six (6+) courses at a Library Training Academy consisting of ninety-six (96+) training hours
• First Aid
• CPR

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Comprehensive knowledge of library reference, circulation, cataloging and classification methods
• Comprehensive knowledge of library practices and procedures
• Ability to sort through variety of data and information
• Requires considerable analytical ability for assessing the condition of library materials in relation to the fee schedule
• Knowledge and ability to apply and successfully explain applicable policies, procedures and information about programs
• Knowledge of general computer operations
• Correct use of English language and vocabulary, both written and oral
• Interact with the public in all situations while maintaining a professional, pleasant, and courteous demeanor
• Ability to manage projects, give presentations, and work for lengths of time with a great attention to detail
• Ability to use Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer, Power Point, and related software
• Work cooperatively and effectively with volunteers, the public, and other employees
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Exercise sound and good judgment at all times
• Handle confidential information in a sensitive manner
• Perform all cash handling procedures as outlined in the Cash Handling Procedures manual
• Utilize koha ILS software
• Ability to utilize self-check units, inventory wand, RFID antennas, and automatic material handler (AMH) for returns
• Utilize efficiently office equipment including, but not limited to, a photo copier, telephone, facsimile, calculator, and shredder
• Utilize efficiently time management skills
• Work independently with limited supervision
• Handle stressful situations calmly
• Determine process and methods best suited to accomplish job duties

Compensation and Benefits
SALARY RANGE:

Full wage range is as follows, please note hiring will normally occur at the minimum of the range and will not exceed the midpoint.

Min: $24.28/hr.
Mid: $29.13/hr.
Max: $33.99/hr.

BENEFITS:

There are no benefits as part of this part-time position.

Schedule:

Wednesday 8:30 am - 2:30 pm
Thursday: 2:30 pm - 8:30 pm
Friday: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Saturday: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm
