Assistant Softball Coach

Job Summary Responsible for assisting the head coach with recruiting and teaching a team of student-athletes the skills of their sport; mentoring the athletes in academic and personal character development; and handling administrative responsibilities as assigned by the head coach, all within a Christian university environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Represent the University with courtesy, tact, consideration, and discretion in all interactions with the HCU community and the public. Assist the head coach in planning and executing practice sessions. Work with student-athletes in developing softball skills. Assess competitor performance. Help formulate workout sessions and game plans. Assist with recruiting efforts, evaluating current and potential talent at high schools and junior colleges. Mentor students individually and in groups in developing life-skills, character building activities, and modeling Christian values. Operate within rules required by the conference and the NCAA. Assist in scheduling opponents. Arrange for equipment, uniforms, and supplies. Plan and execute team travel with authority to commit expenditures up to departmental budget (subject to University purchasing guidelines). Assist in game-day operations and court preparation. Monitor academic progress of student-athletes and counsel them on academic issues. Assist in designing and monitoring a strength and conditioning program. Supervise team managers. Other duties as assigned. Management Responsibilities Directly supervise student-athletes and student workers within the department. Education and Experience Bachelor’s Degree required. Minimum one year coaching experience, preferably collegiate softball, is required. Division I experience is desirable. Licenses, Certificates, Registrations None. Other Job-Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge and understanding of the sport. Knowledge of typical sport-related injuries. Ability to motivate and effectively interact with people. Good communication skills. Must be able to pass the NCAA recruiting test. Knowledge of college softball recruiting is strongly preferred. Knowledge of NCAA rules is essential. Job-Relevant Competencies Generate enthusiasm and pride among players. Experience with ACS, University Athlete, Data Volley, Dragonfly is preferred. Work Environment In performing essential duties, the employee may occasionally work outdoors in various weather conditions and be physically active. Physical Requirements The employee must be able to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally and up to 10 lbs regularly, and must be able to see objects up close.
