Registered Nurse - OR Board Coordinator

Trinity Health Oakland is Level 2 Trauma Center with 15 operating rooms averaging 35 cases per day. Our mission is to provide the highest quality care to every patient requiring surgical intervention. We care for both inpatients and outpatients across elective, urgent and emergent service lines including Acute Care Surgery, Colorectal, General Surgery, Cardio‑Thoracic, Orthopedics, Endocrinology, Neurosurgery, Urology, Gynecology, Oncology, Vascular, and off‑shift Endoscopy. Our nursing staff is supported 24/7 by department‑based anesthesiologists. We are a Certified Joint Center of Excellence and a Robotic Center of Excellence. The OR Board Coordinator maintains a safe, efficient operating room environment for employees, medical staff and patients, ensuring compliance with policies and scheduling. Employment Type Full time Shift 12 Hour Day Shift Position Qualifications Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or equivalent. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Licensed to practice nursing in the state of Michigan. Six months to one year of related working experience in operating room practices, policies and procedures. Special Skills / Aptitudes Interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with hospital personnel and physicians. Excellent customer service orientation to interact with various levels of staff, outside customers and community groups. Duties / Responsibilities Ensures a safe and efficient environment for operating room staff, medical staff and patients. Interprets and enforces OR schedule planning and administration policies. Supports and interprets medical bylaws, rules and regulations of surgical specialty services. Assigns intra‑operative staff based on expertise and recommendations. Schedules addition of urgent cases appropriately and collaborates with first‑call anesthesiologist on emergency start times. Participates in development of intra‑operative patient status reports for families and friends. Attends fire, safety, infection control and disaster plan in‑services. Monitors quality of schedule administration and scheduling process using established criteria. Organizes, develops, implements and modifies schedule planning program based on facility goals. Reviews and updates scheduling policies, operational procedures and protocols. Prepares proposals for presentation to the DSS/OR Advisory regarding policy changes. Establishes quality improvement criteria for schedule planning and maintains ongoing program. Ensures timely patient flow. Communicates schedule delays and changes to anesthesiology, surgeons, OR managers, nursing staff and appropriate units, and establishes schedule modifications. Performs frequent OR rounds to assess case progression and anticipate schedule changes. Controls room turnover with service coordinators, clinical leaders and staff. Assigns lunch and break relief for intr‑operative staff. Adjusts assignments for sick calls and other time‑off requests. Improves accuracy and reduces conflict in staffing. Provides efficient schedule planning and administration to medical staff. Collaborates with the Department of Anesthesia and charge anesthesiologist/CRNA to ensure smooth schedule. Executes physician marketing strategies related to scheduling operative cases. Communicates status of schedule start accuracy, changes and delays to subgroups. Verifies accuracy and feasibility of next day’s schedule. Identifies surgeon‑related scheduling problems and resolves them through appropriate channels. Maintains room utilization data and prepares monthly reports using established criteria. Reviews scheduling policies and recommends changes based on utilization. Supports continuing education programs for operating room staff. Modifies patient flow to allow maximum staff attendance at in‑service programs. Attends in‑service programs to maintain knowledge of intr‑operative care and encourages staff development. Communicates department goals with staff and leadership to facilitate team spirit. Attends seminars and maintains membership in national organizations. Organizes administration of the operating room schedule based on national and area standards. Executes performance expectations for control desk, off‑shift and holding staff using standards‑based evaluation. Meets with employees formally once a year and informally throughout the year to discuss practice changes and role expectations. Delegates authority and responsibility to staff to perform within established expectations. Reviews staff/room utilization and coordinators’ assessments in collaboration with OR management to establish critical staffing mass. Communicates personnel concerns to DSS.
