Payroll Auditor

$20 - $25 per hour

Colonial Payroll Services is seeking a highly detail-oriented and analytical Payroll Auditor to serve as the final checkpoint in our payroll process. In this role, you will review and validate payrolls prepared by our specialists, ensuring complete accuracy before payrolls are finalized and delivered to clients. This position is critical to maintaining our high standards of accuracy, compliance, and client satisfaction. The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, and confident working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Key Responsibilities Perform detailed audits of payrolls prior to final submission to ensure 100% accuracy Review wages, taxes, deductions, and compliance requirements across multiple payrolls Identify discrepancies and collaborate with payroll specialists to resolve issues quickly Perform and validate manual gross-to-net payroll calculations Ensure payrolls comply with federal, state, and local regulations, including multi-state requirements Take proactive steps to identify trends, prevent errors, and improve processes Maintain strict confidentiality when handling sensitive employee and client information Communicate effectively with internal teams and clients regarding payroll questions or discrepancies Support reporting, reconciliation, and audit documentation as needed Hourly Wage: $20 - $25 per hour What We’re Looking For Ability to work independently with strong organization, attention to detail, and self-motivation Experience processing or supporting U.S. payroll, with working knowledge of payroll regulations, tax laws, and compliance requirements Ability to perform manual gross-to-net calculations and clearly explain pay results Familiarity with payroll systems (Apex and Swipeclock preferred) Excellent customer service skills with the ability to work effectively with clients and internal team members Positive, professional attitude with strong relationship-building skills Exceptional organizational and multitasking abilities; comfortable in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment Ability to handle confidential or sensitive issues with discretion and sound judgment Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to prioritize tasks, work under pressure, and remain flexible—including occasional overtime Strong knowledge of federal and state wage and tax laws, including multi-state payroll Understanding of wage withholding laws and calculations Desire to learn, grow, and contribute to a collaborative team environment Professional certifications such as FPC or CPP are strongly desired Qualifications Minimum of 6+ years of proven payroll processing experience Experience analyzing payroll data and generating reports Understanding of basic HR processes and procedures Multi-state payroll experience preferred Strong knowledge of with wage withholding laws and calculations Frequently Asked Questions What is the application process for a position at Colonial Payroll Services?
