It is responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of all North Carolinians, providing human service needs for special populations including individuals who are deaf, blind, developmentally disabled, and mentally ill, and helping poor North Carolinians achieve economic independence.Description of WorkThe Medical Laboratory Technologist I / NBS Medical Laboratory Technologist I position supports the Newborn Screening (NBS) Unit of the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health by conducting high‑complexity laboratory testing to identify serious metabolic, endocrine, genetic, and hemoglobin disorders in newborns statewide.This role operates within the Fluoroimmunoassay and Hemoglobinopathy (FIA/Hgb) Laboratory and involves all phases of testing, including pre‑analytical specimen processing, analytical instrument‑based testing, and post‑analytical data review. Work includes performing hemoglobinopathy testing, fluoroimmunoassays, and enzyme immunoassays using dried blood spot specimens and automated laboratory systems. The position functions in a highly regulated public health environment that relies on strict adherence to established procedures, quality assurance practices, and accurate data interpretation.Key Duties Include:Perform laboratory testing for hemoglobinopathies (Hgb), cystic fibrosis (CF), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), congenital hypothyroidism (CH), galactosemia (GAL), and biotinidase (BIOT) deficiency using dried blood spot or whole‑blood specimens.Operate semi‑automated and automated laboratory instrumentation, including isoelectric focusing (IEF), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), fluoroimmunoassays (FIA), and enzyme immunoassays (EIA) platforms, according to established procedures.Conduct pre‑analytical, analytical, and post‑analytical tasks to ensure accurate, complete, and valid newborn screening results.Perform routine instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and daily quality control evaluations to support continuous laboratory operations.Utilize the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to enter, retrieve, verify, and report patient screening results.Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance protocols to ensure compliance with regulatory and programmatic requirements.Operate automated dried‑blood‑spot punchers and computer‑driven laboratory systems during specimen preparation and test setup.Apply pipetting techniques, data interpretation skills, and established workflows to support high‑throughput screening processes.Document all testing activities accurately and maintain required records in accordance with laboratory standards.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management PreferencesSalary Grade Range: $58,265.00 - $87,396.00Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required.
