Job Requirements Requisition Number: R-22939 Facility: LOC0020 - 143 Longwater Norwell, 143 Longwater Drive, Norwell, MA 02061 Department Name: SMC Surgical Services Status: Full time Budgeted Hours: 36 Shift: Day (United States of America) The Medical Assistant is responsible for supporting the Specialties and Same Day Care/Urgent Care practice with overall responsibility for maintaining efficiency of patient flow. The areas include but are not limited to Same Day Care/Urgent Care, Dermatology, Rheumatology, Pulmonary, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease and Podiatry. Some providers practice in either Norwell or Quincy. Clinical duties include maintaining universal precautions; rooming patients, taking vital signs and measurements, performing phlebotomy as needed, administering vaccines, and providing support during procedures. He/She will also handle patient education, counseling, various testing and screenings, maintaining patient rooms, setting up equipment, ordering and tracking supplies, and general administrative tasks such as scheduling, filing, answering phones, preparing correspondence and patient charts, and obtaining referrals and paperwork from referring physicians. Compensation Pay Range: $17.42 - $23.45 per hour Essential Functions Greets patients in a professional manner and escorts them into exam rooms. Assists with varied procedures, including routine and non-routine (complex) procedures under the supervision of the MD, NP, or PA. Assists with minor procedures and wound care as requested. Acts as a chaperone when needed. Takes vital signs and documents accordingly. Assists the administrative team with greeting patients, scheduling appointments, processing orders, collecting encounter forms, and answering telephones. Assists with determining the reason for visit or phone call, flags immediate responses, takes messages appropriately, and notifies appropriate medical staff. Coordinating room rotations. Assists with receiving test results for physicians and follows up with patients on labs and tests under the direction of the physician or nurse practitioner. Cleans instruments and equipment following infection control guidelines. Maintains sterilizer competencies. Maintains excellent customer service and fosters an environment of optimal patient care. Ensures appropriate communication of schedule changes with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, staff, and patients. Cross‑trains to cover front desk duties when needed, including patient check‑in/out and answering questions. Performs orientation for new employees using the established check‑off sheet reviewing departmental protocols, policies, and workflow. Participates in two annual flu clinic sessions. Promotes a culture of safety through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment. Other duties as required. Works one weekend shift per month and one holiday per year. Job Requirements Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent preferred. Completion of a Medical Assistant program preferred. Minimum Work Experience: Experience in a clinical setting preferred. License/Certifications: BLS – Basic Life Support required. CMA – Certified Medical Assistant certificate preferred.
