Duties and Responsibilities (* denotes essential functions):

1. *Use specialized equipment to digitize unique sound and video media collections.
2. *Develop specialized systems and/or software applications to assist in the operations of a large-scale, audio digitization and streaming project for obsolete media.
3. *Maintain, calibrate and operate equipment according to standard procedures to record and edit audio or video, e.g., cleaning, playback, recording and dubbing machines, computerized systems and software.
4. *Troubleshoot equipment problems and determine course of action to take; maintain repair records; rewire equipment for special needs; prepare new equipment with security devices and engrave units with University identification.
5. *Transport, set up, and break down audiovisual equipment, technology systems, and supply materials for events, presentations, or daily operations. Work outside of normal business hours including night, weekend and/or holidays as needed.
6. Order and maintain inventory of audiovisual supplies. Research and write technical specifications on invitation for bids for audiovisual supplies contract.
7. Assess, plan and prepare short and long-range equipment needs by evaluating and monitoring the condition and deterioration of current equipment.
8. *Analyze need, research appropriate solutions, investigate vendors for the product, prepare request for quotations and submit to vendors for quotes on audio visual equipment used in the digitization workflows.
9. Research and monitors new technology and media formats in audio and video through participation in on-line discussion groups, relevant professional organizations, and conferences and workshops.
10. Advise and recommends to the library administration, technology innovations used in media, storage devices, streaming servers, file types, and equipment and the methods used to implement them.
11. *Follow standards and best practices to train students and/or staff in specialized procedures, use of software, hardware, media and equipment to maintain complex digital media recording, encoding and preservation program operations.
12. Provide individual and group training for faculty, staff and student workers in the correct and specialty procedures for audiovisual equipment.
13. Work with faculty and information technology staff in activities related to digitization of audio and video materials in the UHM Libraries in order to meet the digital media needs of a large and diverse academic research facility.
14. *Carry out digital assets management operations. Work with Library IT, Preservation Department and Collection Development librarians to apply up-to-date standards for digitization, treatment, and preservation of digital media.
15. Work with Department Head to ensure copyright compliance for all digital media assets maintained by the UHM Libraries.
16. Support the development of the institutional repository by working with librarians, specialists, faculty and staff to make digital audio/video material accessible to users.
17. *Evaluate media for signs of deterioration and coordinate media preservation for the archival copy of audiovisual materials.
18. *Implement standards-based practices and methodologies to determine condition of analog media for preservation of audio and video materials to ensure highest quality preservation.
19. *Implement standards-based procedures, employ specialized techniques and conduct activities to convert analog and digital audio and video, encode audio and video files for output to digital media, storage devices, and/or online/web access and delivery.
20. *Perform administrative and technical tasks related to media digitization, streaming, archiving, and preservation for audio, video, and multimedia projects.
21. *Provide technical support for all digital media activities including off-air recordings, analog to digital transfer and born-digital media.
22. *Provide technical support for accessibility requirements such as ADA accommodation for digital audio materials.
23. *As digitization specialist for audio and video materials, conduct or coordinate activities to ensure long-term preservation and access to sound and moving images acquired by UHM Library for use in instruction and research.
24. Provide input and/or documentation for preparation of grant applications for digital media projects within the UHM Library and with appropriate external partners.
25. Participate in groups, committees, task forces as assigned to provide input on digital media projects and activities.
26. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Professional Work Experience:

• Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Music, Audio Engineering, Arts & Sciences, or Creative Media emphasizing multimedia technology skills or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for multimedia digitization projects and workflows; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of media design and production as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
• Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with audio digitization, editing, and streaming.
• Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
• Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
• If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications:

• Professional experience with large scale multimedia workflows and projects.
• Considerable working knowledge and understanding of the broad technology, systems, hardware and software associated with Media Design and Production.
• Ability to work outside of normal business hours including night, weekend, and/or holidays as needed.
• Ability to lift, move, or transport equipment (such as video and supplies boxes) weighing up to 40 lbs., with or without assistance (e.g., utilizing hand trucks, rolling carts, or team assistance).

Desirable Qualifications:

• Familiarity with file systems, data structures, storage concepts, and basic networking principles.
• Working knowledge of multimedia file formats, encoding concepts, or digital signal processing principles.
• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical systems methodically and effectively.
