Teacher - Special Education Licensed Specialist
The Special Education Licensed Specialist including Occupational Therapist / Physical Therapist provides evaluation, consultation, and therapeutic services to students with disabilities in order to support access to educational programs and participation in school activities. The therapist collaborates with families, educators, related service providers, and community agencies to develop and implement individualized supports that promote student independence, mobility, functional performance, and educational success.
A successful Occupational Therapist supports students in developing the functional, sensory, fine motor, self-regulation, self-care, and adaptive skills necessary to access educational environments and participate successfully in school activities. A successful Physical Therapist supports students in developing mobility, positioning, physical access, motor planning, and functional movement skills necessary to safely participate in educational programs and school-related activities.
Requirements
Education Level Details: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
License / Certification: Must possess or qualify for a valid Colorado license appropriate to the assigned discipline. Occupational Therapists must possess a valid Colorado Occupational Therapist license. Physical Therapists must possess a valid Colorado Physical Therapist license. Ability to obtain and maintain all credentials required by state and federal regulations.
Work Experience: Experience providing school-based therapy services. Experience participating in multidisciplinary evaluation and eligibility processes. Experience developing and implementing therapy plans and accommodations. Experience collaborating with educational teams and families. Experience working with assistive technology, adaptive equipment, and accessibility supports.
Other Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of IDEA, ECEA, and special education service delivery requirements. Knowledge of assessment tools, therapeutic interventions, and disability-related supports. Strong consultation, communication, and collaboration skills. Regular attendance is essential.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Special Education Services: Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with IDEA, ECEA, and district requirements. Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and communicate progress to families and educational teams. Coordinate and participate in annual reviews, reevaluations, eligibility meetings, manifestation determinations, and transition planning activities as required. Collaborate with related service providers, general education staff, administrators, and families to support student success. Maintain accurate and legally compliant records, documentation, progress reports, and service logs. Support transition planning activities and postsecondary readiness goals for students as required by age and disability-related needs.
Evaluation and Assessment: Conduct evaluations, screenings, observations, and assessments to identify student needs and determine eligibility for related services in accordance with district, state, and federal requirements. Participate as a multidisciplinary team member in the evaluation, reevaluation, and eligibility determination process. Interpret assessment results and prepare written reports that support educational decision-making and service recommendations. Utilize assessment data to develop individualized therapy goals, accommodations, modifications, and intervention plans. Assist educational teams in identifying barriers to student participation and access within educational environments. Monitor student progress through ongoing data collection and assessment practices.
Therapeutic Services: Provide direct and consultative occupational therapy and/or physical therapy services as identified within Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Develop and implement therapeutic interventions that support student participation, independence, mobility, access, and functional performance in educational settings. Support student development in areas including fine motor skills, gross motor skills, sensory processing, self-care, positioning, mobility, motor planning, and adaptive functioning as appropriate to the assigned discipline. Recommend, implement, and monitor adaptive equipment, assistive technology, environmental modifications, and accessibility supports. Integrate therapeutic strategies into classroom, school, and community-based educational activities. Promote student independence, self-advocacy, and participation across educational environments.
Consultation and Collaboration: Collaborate with teachers, administrators, related service providers, paraprofessionals, families, medical professionals, and community agencies to support student success. Provide consultation regarding accommodations, modifications, accessibility, positioning, mobility, adaptive equipment, sensory supports, and therapeutic strategies. Assist educational teams in implementing interventions and supports that improve student access to educational programs and activities. Provide training and guidance to staff and families regarding disability-related needs, therapeutic recommendations, and equipment use. Participate in IEP meetings, problem-solving teams, multidisciplinary team meetings, and other collaborative planning processes. Support transitions between grade levels, educational settings, programs, and postsecondary environments as appropriate.
Compliance and Documentation: Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant evaluation reports, service logs, progress reports, Medicaid documentation, and other required records. Ensure services are provided in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), district procedures, IDEA, ECEA, and applicable professional standards. Monitor and document student progress toward therapy goals and communicate progress to educational teams and families. Maintain required licensure, certifications, and professional development requirements. Participate in district, state, and federal monitoring activities, audits, and compliance reviews as required. Adhere to all district policies, professional ethical standards, confidentiality requirements, and applicable laws governing related service delivery.
Communications: Establish and maintain professional communication with families, students, colleagues, related service providers, outside agencies, and community partners regarding student progress and educational programming.
Professional Growth and Development: Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills. Attend and participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, professional learning opportunities, staff meetings, and committees as required. Assist in selecting books, equipment, and other instructional materials. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents required.
Policy, Reports and Law: Comply with all applicable federal laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and Title I and Title III program requirements (as applicable), along with other national regulations governing K12 public education. Comply with all State of Colorado education laws and regulations, including the Colorado READ Act (if applicable), the Exceptional Children's Educational Act (ECEA) (if applicable), and all standards and guidelines established by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE). Follow all relevant Board of Education policies and Adams 14 Operational Policies related to curriculum, instruction, assessment, safety, student services, and professional conduct. Adhere to district-level procedures and school-based expectations regarding instruction, family communication, data reporting, and school improvement planning. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or designated supervisor.
Budget Responsibility: Compile and maintain records of instructional materials and supplies.
Related Services Essential Functions
Occupational Therapist / Physical Therapist: Conduct evaluations and assessments to determine student needs and eligibility for related services. Recommend adaptive equipment, assistive technology, environmental modifications, and accessibility supports. Provide training and consultation to staff and families regarding therapeutic strategies and student supports. Support student participation in educational programs, extracurricular activities, and school environments. Maintain accurate service logs, evaluation reports, progress reports, and compliance documentation.
Occupational Therapy Specific: Assess and support fine motor, visual motor, sensory processing, self-care, adaptive behavior, and self-regulation skills. Recommend and support implementation of sensory strategies, adaptive tools, and classroom accommodations. Support students in developing functional skills necessary for participation in educational activities.
Physical Therapy Specific: Assess and support gross motor development, mobility, positioning, balance, strength, endurance, and functional movement. Recommend and monitor adaptive equipment, mobility devices, positioning supports, and accessibility modifications. Support students in safely accessing educational environments and participating in school activities.
Supervision Requirements
May provide direction, training, consultation, and oversight to paraprofessionals, interpreters, instructional assistants, and support staff assigned to support students receiving specialized services.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
The physical demands, work environment factors and mental functions described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work primarily in a usual office or school environment including classrooms, cafeterias, hallways, playgrounds, gyms, and other spaces accessible to students. The Employee may be required to work from a remote location in the event of a district shut-down or other event. Mental Functions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, compare, analyze, coordinate, instruct, evaluate, and use interpersonal skills. Occasionally required to compile, copy, compute and negotiate.
